iOS 17.4 Is Here and Ready For a Whole New Europe

Jess Weatherbed reports via The Verge: Apple's iOS 17.4 update is now available, introducing new emoji and a cryptographic security protocol for iMessage, alongside some major changes to the App Store and contactless payments for the iPhone platform in Europe. Apple is making several of these changes to comply with the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA), a law that aims to make the digital economy fairer by removing unfair advantages that tech giants hold over businesses and end users. iOS 17.4 will allow third-party developers to offer alternative app marketplaces and app downloads to EU users from outside the iOS App Store. Developers wanting to take advantage of this will be required to go through Apple's approval process and pay Apple a "Core Technology Fee" that charges 50 euro cents per install once an app reaches 1 million downloads annually. iPhone owners in the EU will see different update notes that specifically mention new options available for app stores, web browsers, and...

M3 MacBook Air vs M1 MacBook Air -- Compared

Apple's M3 MacBook Air update isn't much of a change compared to the M2 version, but it is for the M1. Here's what a two-generation difference makes for the MacBook Air.

M3 MacBook Air vs M1 MacBook Air
Monday's introduction of the M3 MacBook Air family is an improvement for the lineup, but it is chiefly a spec-bump upgrade rather than an overhaul from the previous M2 versions.

The M2 generation was a much bigger change for the lineup from the...

Early M3 MacBook Air benchmarks aren't...

The first benchmarks for Apple's M3 MacBook Air have allegedly appeared, with the results showing a big improvement over its predecessor, the M2 MacBook Air.

13-inch MacBook Air and 15-inch MacBook Air
Apple introduced its M3 MacBook Air lineup on Monday, adding the 3-nanometer chip to its thin and light notebook line. Less than 24 hours later, what appear to be the first benchmarks for the new models have surfaced.

The benchmarks for the M3 models, found in the Geekbench 6 database by MySmartPrice on Tuesday, show a...

The first claimed M3 MacBook Air benchmarks have appeared on Geekbench. Unsurprisingly, given both machines have the same M3 chip, performance is near-identical to the base model 14-inch M3 MacBook Pro.

The benchmarks are for a machine labelled Mac15,13, which is consistent with a 15-inch MacBook Air

Apple drops to fourth place in China's...

China's smartphone market has continued to decline so far in 2024, and local resellers such as Huawei have overtaken Apple's iPhone.

iPhone 15 Pro colorful lineup
After coming top in China overall in 2023, Apple has dropped to fourth place in the first six weeks of 2024, according to Counterpoint Research. The post-holiday period always sees a significant drop in sales for all resellers, though, and what may be more significant is the decline in China's smartphone market.

Apple's success in the last quarter of 2023 had led to what seemed to be a stemming of the years of decline in China's overall sales. Counterpoint's...

An analyst note suggests regulation from the EU and the $2 billion fine may put pressure on Apple's earnings per share, but its shift to AI will help keep the earnings multiple even at about 25x.

Apple is dealing with regulatory pressures and other unknowns
There's a lot of uncertainty surrounding Apple, thanks to multiple competing forces. All eyes are on Apple's push into AI after Project Titan was canceled, and the EU continues to take issue with Apple's business practices.

According to a note viewed by AppleInsider from JP Morgan, Apple's current 27x earnings per share is likely to be pushed down to 25x due to several factors surrounding the company. It emphasizes potential risk from...

The MacBook Air's famous wedge-shape design is no more, replaced by the square-sided M3 model. Long live the sloped MacBook Air.

The famous envelope image, redone for an Apple MacBook Air ad
Back in 1991, Apple showed up the entire laptop industry by making one key design decision that all rivals then forever copied. That was the moving of the keyboard from the front of the laptop to the back, and turning what was wasted space into a useful palm rest.

As simple and even obvious as that now appears, it remains the single best ergonomic design change in laptops — but then there was a second one. Some 17 years later in 2008, Apple unveiled the wedge as we've known and adored since.

An iPhone battery
The class-action lawsuit alleged that Apple's software updates slowed down the iPhone 6 and iPhone 7 models, allegations that Apple firmly denies. However, to deal with the lawsuit, Apple agreed to make payments to the class, totaling between $11.1 million and $14.4 million.

The defined class consists of Apple customers who bought an iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, or iPhone SE running iOS 10.2.1 or later, or an iPhone 7 or 7 Plus running iOS 11.2 or later, before December 21, 2017. It applies to all residents in all...

Apple introduced the M3 MacBook Air with a headlining new feature. For the first time, the Apple silicon MacBook Air will be able to simultaneously drive two external monitors. The new feature also raises an interesting question: will the that was introduced in October also gain multi-display support in the same way? It shares the same version of Apple silicon and has Pro in the name, after all.

M3 MacBook Air vs M2 MacBook Air -- Compared

Apple's addition of M3 to the MacBook Air line is the very definition of a spec-bump upgrade. Here's what has — and hasn't — changed in Apple's value-oriented notebook family.

15-inch MacBook Air
It has taken Apple four months to update the MacBook Air range after introducing the M3-equipped MacBook Pro lineup. Just like the more powerful models, the 13-inch MacBook Air and 15-inch MacBook Air get mostly internal changes, with a largely untouched physical design.

A spec-bump isn't entirely unexpected for Apple, since it does tend to use the same...

Three things Apple got wrong with the Vision Pro...

After a solid month of using Apple Vision Pro, I'm finding the product a lot easier to wear for longer periods of time than I expected. At the same time, I think Apple made at least three critical errors in the initial launch of its new spatial computing platform.

Apple Vision Pro
The technology Apple packed into its first generation Vision Pro is phenomenal. In typical Apple fashion, the company did not rush out a product that merely tried to duplicated the "look at feel" of an existing Virtual Reality product pioneer — the way Microsoft Windows 95 belatedly copied the 1984 Macintosh, the way Google's Android desperately copied Apple's iPhone in 2008, or the way Samsung slavishly copied iPhone, iPad and...

The new 13-inch and 15-inch models feature a thin and light design, up to 18 hours of battery life, and a Liquid Retina display. The M3 chip, built using 3-nanometer technology, boasts an 8-core CPU, up to a 10-core GPU, and supports up to 24GB of unified memory.

The laptops also offer enhanced AI capabilities, with a faster 16-core Neural Engine and accelerators in the CPU and GPU for improved on-device machine learning performance. This enables features such as real-time speech-to-text, translation, and visual understanding. The 13-inch MacBook Air with M3 starts at $1,099, while the 15-inch model starts at $1,299. Both models are available for order starting Monday and will begin arriving to customers and be available in stores on Friday, March 8. Apple also reduced the...
