Under pressure, Apple will restore Epic Games'...

Epic has committed to not violating Apple's App Store rules and DMA policies, and now both Apple and Epic Games are saying that Epic's third-party app store developer's account will be restored.

Epic Games viral '1984' ad campaign against Apple
What a difference two days can make. Less than 48 hours after Epic disclosed that it hadn't guaranteed that it would follow Apple's rules to Apple's satisfaction, Apple has reversed course because Epic has now said that it will comply.

"Following conversations with Epic, they have committed to follow the rules, including our [Digital Markets Act] policies," Apple said in a statement to AppleInsider. "As a result, Epic Sweden AB has been permitted to re-sign the developer agreement and accepted into the Apple Developer Program."

What Apple Switcher ad star Ellen Feiss is doing now

Student Ellen Feiss may have looked stoned in her famous Apple Switcher ad, but it turns out that she wasn't kidding when she claimed that the paper a PC destroyed was "really good."

Ellen Feiss: Left: as in her Switcher ad and (right) as she is today (Source: Ohio State University)
The Switcher TV ads were central to an Apple marketing campaign that briefly ran in 2002 and 2003. It featured people talking about how and why they had moved from a PC to a Mac.

Overall the campaign failed to achieve much success for Apple. The company would move on to much greater effect with the "Get a Mac" campaign featuring John Hodgman as PC and Justin Long as Mac.

A Member of the European Parliament who worked on the EU's Digital Markets Act says Apple banning Epic Games is is weird, and so is likely to mean it becomes the first Big Tech firm to be fined under the new law.

Still from an Epic Games anti-Apple ad
The EU has already officially asked Apple to explain itself over refusing to allow Epic Games to create a rival App Store despite the DMA's rules. Now a German MEP who is not involved with enforcement, but did work on the DMA, says Apple is likely to be investigated for non-compliance.

German MEP Andreas Schwab, who led the negotiations that finalized the DMA on behalf of the EU Parliament, says that makes Apple a likely first target for non-compliance.

How to take a full-page screenshot on iPhone

It's surprisingly simple to capture a long web page in a single screenshot on your iPhone or iPad, and edit it to hold just the information you want.

When you create a screenshot on your iPhone — or iPad, for that matter — the image that is created initially appears to be just the portion of the web page that appears on your screen — a literal "screen" image. However, website articles and home pages tend to be much "longer," running off-screen until you scroll down.

In fact, though, your "screenshot" taken on an iPhone also captures the entire page of the website, no matter how long it is. You have to then say that you want the full screen image, but when you do, you can also easily edit the screenshot after it is taken to trim it to any section you really want.

EU Looking Into Apple's Decision To Kill Epic...

The European Union has confirmed it's looking into Apple's decision to close Epic Games' developer account -- citing three separate regulations that may apply. From a report: Yesterday the Fortnite maker revealed Apple had terminated the account, apparently reversing a decision to approve the developer account last month. Epic had planned to launch its own app store, the Epic Games Stores, on iOS in Europe, as well as Fortnight on Apple's platform. And it accused Apple of breaching the bloc's Digital Markets Act (DMA) by killing its developer account.

Responding to the development, a European Commission spokesperson told TechCrunch it has "requested further explanations on this from Apple under the DMA." The pan-EU regulation applies on Apple from midnight Brussels' time today. The spokesperson also said the EU is evaluating whether Apple's actions raise compliance "doubts" with regard to two other regulations -- the Digital Services Act (DSA) and the platform-to-business...

On Thursday, Apple declared the actions it has taken to bring its iOS platform into compliance with the Digital Markets Act (DMA) now, and what it will do over the next two years. The changes include giving users more control over preinstalled apps and providing developers increased access to user data.

As expected, and as it has done before, Apple begins the document by accusing the DMA of requiring changes to iOS "that bring greater risks to users and developers." It specifically lists "new avenues for malware, fraud and scams, illicit and harmful content, and other privacy and security threats" as concerns that could be caused by downloading...

Steve Jobs personally footed the bill for Apple's phone expenses in 1976, and the check he signed is currently up for auction.

Dated July 8, 1976, the check, payable to Pacific Telephone, carries the signature of Jobs and amounts to $201.41, anchoring it firmly in Apple Computer's early days. It comes from "770 Welch Rd., Ste. 154, Palo Alto," marking the first official address of Apple.

The highest grade of "GEM Mint 10" by PSA/DNA means the check is in pristine condition and carries significant historical value, signifying a crucial point in the development of personal computing. Before the technological upheaval initiated by the first iPhone's launch on June 29, 2007, by more than thirty years, the check highlights a pivotal phase in Apple's development.

Apple is preparing to allow EU-based iPhone users to uninstall its first-party Safari browser by the end of 2024 and is working on a more "user-friendly" way of transferring data "from an iPhone to a non-Apple phone" by fall 2025. Other user-facing initiatives detailed in Apple's document include a "browser switching solution" to transfer data between browsers on the same device, which it plans to make available by late 2024 or early 2025. It'll also be possible to change the default navigation app on iOS by March 2025 in the EU. Right off the bat, the M3 MacBook Airs aren't as interesting as the M2 models.

July 2022's M2 MacBook Air updated the design of the 13-inch laptop for the Apple Silicon era after the M1 Air's external design played it safe. And the first-ever 15-inch MacBook Air, released over a year later, was an appealing option for people who wanted a larger screen but didn't need the extra power or cost of a MacBook Pro. Together, they were a comprehensive rethink of Apple's approach to...

Apple iPhone Sales In China Plummet As Huawei Soars

Huawei is back from the dead after recording a sales jump of 64% in the first six weeks of 2024 compared to a year earlier. Meanwhile, Apple's iPhone sales in China fell by 24% during the same period. The BBC reports: Aside from a resurgence of Huawei sales at the more expensive end of the Chinese phone market, Apple was also "squeezed in the middle on aggressive pricing from the likes of Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi," Counterpoint Research's Mengmeng Zhang wrote. China, which is one of Apple's biggest markets, also saw overall smartphone sales shrink by 7% in the same period, the report said. Huawei struggled for years due to US sanctions but its sales surged after releasing its Mate 60 series of 5G smartphones in August. It came as a major surprise as the Chinese firm was cut off from key chips and technology required for 5G mobile internet.

Honor, which is the smartphone brand spun off from Huawei in 2020, was the only other top-five brand to see sales increase in China during...

For months, some of the biggest tech companies have been wrapped up in discussions with the European Commission (EC), seeking feedback and tweaking their plans to ensure their core platform services comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA) ahead of that law taking force in the European Union tomorrow.

Under the DMA, companies designated as gatekeepers—Alphabet/Google, Amazon, Apple, ByteDance, Meta, and Microsoft—must follow strict rules to ensure that they don't engage in unfair business practices that could limit consumer choice in core platform services. These include app stores, search engines, social networking services, online marketplaces, operating systems, web browsers, advertising services, cloud computing services,...

Apple Terminated Epic's Developer Account

Epic Games, in a blog post: We recently announced that Apple approved our Epic Games Sweden AB developer account. We intended to use that account to bring the Epic Games Store and Fortnite to iOS devices in Europe thanks to the Digital Markets Act (DMA). To our surprise, Apple has terminated that account and now we cannot develop the Epic Games Store for iOS. This is a serious violation of the DMA and shows Apple has no intention of allowing true competition on iOS devices.

The DMA requires Apple to allow third-party app stores, like the Epic Games Store. Article 6(4) of the DMA says: "The gatekeeper shall allow and technically enable the installation and effective use of third-party software applications or software application stores using, or interoperating with, its operating system and allow those software applications or software application stores to be accessed by means other than the relevant core platform services of that gatekeeper."

In terminating Epic's...
