Apple is planning to make further changes in EU countries to allow some developers to distribute their iOS apps directly from a website. While Apple is opening up iOS to more third-party apps here, these are still some key security protections around how apps are distributed via websites -- namely, you'll still have to work within the strict Apple app development ecosystem.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has argued that for age-restricted apps, age verification should be Apple’s job. He’s now been joined in this view by the new head of trust and safety at Match, the company behind leading dating apps like Tinder, Hinge, OkCupid, and Plenty of Fish.

Yoel Roth – who formerly had the same role in Twitter – said that Apple and Google are in a better position to accurately assess the age of their smartphone users …

The Apple Vision Pro could prove useful both in and out of the operating room as developers find new ways to utilize spatial computing.

In February, Apple launched the Apple Vision Pro, which has caught the attention of healthcare professionals for its potential applications. With this technology, healthcare developers can now create apps that can revolutionize a variety of areas, such as clinical education, surgical planning, training, medical imaging, and behavioral health.

"We're thrilled to see the incredible apps that developers across the healthcare community are bringing to Apple Vision Pro," Apple's vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations, Susan Prescott, said in...

Apple Vision Pro will be the platform for the killer...

Ever since the dawn of personal computing, there has always been a worry about how the public could be tempted to buy new hardware until there was enough new software written for it to make it demonstrably useful. Apple, not Meta, is in a prime position to make this happen with VR.

Apple Vision Pro is hungry for content
Early advertisements for home computers often suggested that buyers would be laying down $2,000 or more to streamline their food preparation. Presumably, the ads suggested it could possibly make some sense to place a steel box, bulky CRT monitor and various cabled drives and other peripherals next to boiling water, steam, and other heat sources as well as sticky sauces, fluffy powders and other threats to the electronics.

"Computer assisted cooking" was only one of a variety of impractical ideas that Apple floated in the late '70s as it was trying to imagine how people might use their new technology purchases. Fortunately, these...

Apple and Tesla feel the pain as China opts for...

Enlarge / Domestically made smartphones were much in evidence at the National People’s Congress in Beijing (credit: Wang Zhao/AFP/Getty Images)

Apple and Tesla cracked China, but now the two largest US consumer companies in the country are experiencing cracks in their own strategies as domestic rivals gain ground and patriotic buying often trumps their allure.

Falling market share and sales figures reported this month indicate the two groups face rising competition and the whiplash of US-China geopolitical tensions. Both have turned to discounting to try to maintain their appeal.

A shift away from Apple, in particular, has been sharp, spurred on by a top-down campaign to reduce iPhone usage among state employees and the triumphant return of Chinese national champion Huawei,...

Although Apple has long rejected the concept of a touchscreen iMac or MacBook, and for good reason, there was one product which made us wonder whether there might be a role for such a device: the Microsoft Surface Studio (above).

Reports of another fake bitcoin wallet in the App Store are claiming that "Leather Wallet & Hiro Bitcoin" took over $120,000 in a single fraudulent transaction.

Apple walks away empty handed at the Oscars

Despite 13 Academy Award nominations, Apple TV+ won none at the Oscars ceremony, in a year that saw almost all streamers shut out. Here's why that matters.

Lily Gladstone and Leonardo DiCaprio in 'Killers of the Flower Moon'
It was already clear going in that this was not going to be a year when the Oscars made the best picture be the Best Picture. But as well as "Barbie" being practically ignored, there was only a single award for any streaming service.

Netflix took home an Oscar for "The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar," an entry in the Live Action Short Film category. That was the only streaming win in a year that had seen a total of 32 nominations across Netflix, Apple TV+, and more.

Why people transfer playlists to Apple Music

There's a clear choice for music lovers who seek exceptional sound quality — and that's Apple Music. Here's how to use FreeYourMusic to move all your playlists to the best streaming music service for Apple users.

Use Free Your Music to transfer Spotify to Apple Music
The great debate for music lovers is about which platforms offer exceptional sound quality - without compromise. Spotify quickly positioned itself as the default; it provides everything you could want and more. But the audio quality is subpar, and many find the app cluttered.

Spotify is no longer strictly music-focused, either. Instead, you'll find podcasts and audiobooks mixed in, all on the same app interface.

Oscars 2024: Netflix Wins Just One Award and Apple...

Streamers narrowly avoided getting shut out at the 2024 Oscars: Netflix came away with just one trophy and Apple left empty-handed, after they garnered a total of 32 nominations. From a report: Netflix collected its one win for Wes Anderson's "The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar," an adaptation of a Roald Dahl story, in the live action short film category. The 40-minute film, with a cast that includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, and Ralph Fiennes, is the first Oscar for Anderson (who wasn't in attendance to receive the award). Heading into Sunday's 96th Academy Awards, Netflix led all studios and platforms with 19 nominations across 11 films, including seven for Bradley Cooper's "Maestro" -- which was shut out. Apple had picked up 13 nods, including 10 for Martin Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon," which also drew a goose egg.

Since 2017, Netflix has now won 23 Oscars in all. But the best picture prize continues to elude the streamer as "Maestro" lost...

Apple Time Capsules
In 2008 Apple introduced a product called Time Capsule, which combined a wireless AirPort Base Station and an internal hard drive along with the macOS Time Machine backup software.

Time Capsule acted as a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device and allowed users to both manually back up their data by using a Time Capsule as a NAS volume, as well as by using the Time Machine app to automate backups.

The Apple IIgs: On a Machine This Slow, You Had To...

Long-time Slashdot reader garote writes: It's the year 1991. You're a teenage computer geek. You've just upgraded to an Apple IIgs, your first "16-bit" computer. To relieve the crushing boredom of your High School coursework, you and your friends embark on the computer geek equivalent of forming a heavy metal band: Making your own video game. You meet at the benches during lunch hour, and pass around crude plans scribbled on graph paper. You assign each other impressive titles like "Master Programmer", "Sound Designer", and "Area Data Input". You swap 3.5" disks like furtive secret agents, and stay up coding untl 3am. Your parents look at your owlish eyes — and your slipping grades — and ask if you're "on drugs". If that sounds familiar, this essay may prove interesting. It uses the game my friends and I started — but didn't finish — in High School over 30 years ago, to explore the absurd programming contortions we did to make it playable on the Apple IIgs: The red-headed stepchild...

Dear Tim, It’s time to get lost in the music

Dear Tim,

I bought my first Apple product back in 2004, an HP-branded iPod. In 2005, I purchased a PowerBook G4 and have never looked back. I’ve been an Apple customer ever since, acquiring multiple iPhones, iPads, Apple TVs, and Apple Watches along the way. Like many others, I joined the App Store frenzy, becoming part of a global community. My journey with Apple mirrors that of many users; I adore Apple products.

However, I believe we’ve accelerated our technological advancements too rapidly with products designed to steal our attention away from the real world. This concern has weighed on my soul, leading me to stop wearing an Apple Watch years ago. Not because it isn’t a great product but because I grew tired of constant connectivity.

Apple moves to parallel flash chips in entry-level...

Apple has finally fixed its SSD speeds in the entry-level model of M3 MacBook Air, with it now using two flash chips instead of just one.

15-inch MacBook Air
Early models of Apple Silicon MacBook Air suffered a problem with the lowest-capacity models, in that its SSD storage wasn't necessarily as fast as other capacities. It now seems that, for the third generation, Apple has made a change to eliminate the problem.

In previous releases, it was discovered that the base 256GB capacity models used only one flash chip for storage. While other models used two running in parallel, such as two 256GB chips for a 512GB capacity drive, the 256GB model would use one 256GB flash chip instead of two 128GB versions.
