In an interview on Monday, the European Union antitrust chief said that its $2 billion fine on Apple Music was over obvious consumer harms leading to discovery issues — despite Spotify holding more than twice the market share.

European Commission Executive Vice President Margrethe Vestager has been defending the EU's $2 billion fine, saying that it was specifically to punish past behavior and ensure Apple does not block developers offering cheaper alternatives to customers.

"[The fine is] the equivalent of 0.5% of global turnover, so obviously, this is not a fine that would sort of shake Apple as such,"...

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, AirPods Pro will gain a new "hearing aid mode" with the release of iOS 18 later this year. MacRumors reports: Writing in the subscriber edition of his regular Power On newsletter, Gurman claims that the "big news" for AirPods Pro in the near term will be support for a hearing aid-style function when iOS 18 drops in the fall. To be clear, this isn't the first time we have heard a potential hearing aid feature for AirPods Pro. Streamers narrowly avoided getting shut out at the 2024 Oscars: Netflix came away with just one trophy and Apple left empty-handed, after they garnered a total of 32 nominations. The 40-minute film, with a cast that includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, and Ralph Fiennes, is the first Oscar for Anderson (who wasn't in attendance to receive the award). Long-time Slashdot reader garote writes: It's the year 1991. You're a teenage computer geek. You've just upgraded to an Apple IIgs, your first "16-bit" computer. Your parents look at your owlish eyes — and your slipping grades — and ask if you're "on drugs". If that sounds familiar, this essay may prove interesting. Dear Tim, It’s time to get lost in the music

Dear Tim,

I bought my first Apple product back in 2004, an HP-branded iPod. In 2005, I purchased a PowerBook G4 and have never looked back. I’ve been an Apple customer ever since, acquiring multiple iPhones, iPads, Apple TVs, and Apple Watches along the way. Like many others, I joined the App Store frenzy, becoming part of a global community. My journey with Apple mirrors that of many users; I adore Apple products.

However, I believe we’ve accelerated our technological advancements too rapidly with products designed to steal our attention away from the real world. This concern has weighed on my soul, leading me to stop wearing an Apple Watch years ago. Not because it isn’t a great product but because I grew tired of constant connectivity.

Apple moves to parallel flash chips in entry-level...

Apple has finally fixed its SSD speeds in the entry-level model of M3 MacBook Air, with it now using two flash chips instead of just one.

15-inch MacBook Air
Early models of Apple Silicon MacBook Air suffered a problem with the lowest-capacity models, in that its SSD storage wasn't necessarily as fast as other capacities. It now seems that, for the third generation, Apple has made a change to eliminate the problem.

In previous releases, it was discovered that the base 256GB capacity models used only one flash chip for storage. While other models used two running in parallel, such as two 256GB chips for a 512GB capacity drive, the 256GB model would use one 256GB flash chip instead of two 128GB versions.

Apple has agreed to reinstate Epic Game's Swedish iOS developer account just days after Epic publicized Apple's decision to rescind that account. The move once again paves the way for Epic's plans to release a sideloadable version of the Epic Games Store and Fortnite on iOS devices in Europe.

"Following conversations with Epic, they have committed to follow the rules, including our DMA policies," Apple said in a statement provided to Ars Technica. "As a result, Epic Sweden AB has been permitted to re-sign the developer agreement and accepted into the Apple Developer Program."

Epic Games, in a blog post: Apple has told us and committed to the European Commission that they will reinstate our developer account. This sends a strong signal to developers that the European Commission will act swiftly to enforce the Digital Markets Act and hold gatekeepers accountable. We are moving forward as planned to launch the Epic Games Store and bring Fortnite back to iOS in Europe. Epic CEO Tim Sweeney adds: The DMA went through its first major challenge with Apple banning Epic Games Sweden from competing with the App Store, and the DMA just had its first major victory. Following a swift inquiry by the European Commission, Apple notified the Commission and Epic that it would relent and restore our access to bring back Fortnite and launch Epic Games Store in Europe under the DMA law.

The Switcher TV ads were central to an Apple marketing campaign that briefly ran in 2002 and 2003. It featured people talking about how and why they had moved from a PC to a Mac.

Overall the campaign failed to achieve much success for Apple. The company would move on to much greater effect with the "Get a Mac" campaign featuring John Hodgman as PC and Justin Long as Mac.
