Apple Targets Car Production By 2024 and Eyes '...
According to Reuters, Apple is moving forward with self-driving car technology and is targeting 2024 to produce a passenger vehicle that could include its own breakthrough battery technology. From the report: The iPhone maker's automotive efforts, known as Project Titan, have proceeded unevenly since 2014 when it first started to design its own vehicle from scratch. At one point, Apple drew back the effort to focus on software and reassessed its goals. Doug Field, an Apple veteran who had worked at Tesla Inc, returned to oversee the project in 2018 and laid off 190 people from the team in 2019. Since then, Apple has progressed enough that it now aims to build a vehicle for consumers, two people familiar with the effort said, asking not to be named because Apple's plans are not public. Apple's goal of building a personal vehicle for the mass market contrasts with rivals such as Alphabet Inc's Waymo, which has built robo-taxis to carry passengers for a driverless ride-hailing service...

The best wireless chargers for iPhone
Over the last few years wireless charging has gone from novelty concept to a conventional function of any modern iPhone. We won’t pretend that wireless charging is always an ideal substitute for plugging in, but it’s a very hassle-free way to keep your phone topped off throughout the day. Freed from the bother of plugging and unplugging, a wireless charger on your desk is as good a place as any to set your phone, knowing the battery is being steadily replenished, and ready for your next outing. A wireless charger by your bed makes it easy to grab and go in the morning, or just to “check one thing” without fussing with the lightning cable.
To save on Apple gear see our roundup of the best holiday deals on iPads, AirPods, Watches, MacBooks, and more.
We’ve tested a big heap of wireless chargers, and these are some of our favorites....

Apple may start building and selling a car within the next four years. According to Reuters, the vehicle may (or may not) use self-driving technology developed by Apple, and it may (or may not) involve a "breakthrough" battery design that would be cheaper and provide longer range than current technology.
Reuters says that Apple is working on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery chemistry, which is cheaper than battery cells that use nickel manganese cobalt chemistry. In July of this year, Tesla announced...

Earlier today the Economic Daily News claimed the long-rumored “Apple Car” is running at least two years ahead of schedule and will be released in the third quarter of 2021. Now Reuters — referencing two unnamed “people familiar with the matter” — makes the more feasible prediction that the tech giant plans to begin production on an Apple-branded self-driving vehicle starting in 2024.

The article says that central to the company’s strategy is a new “monocle” battery design that could “radically” reduce the cost of batteries and increase the vehicle’s range, according to a third person who has purportedly seen Apple...

EFF sides with Apple and against Facebook in Anti-...
The EFF, or Electronic Frontier Foundation has recently declared Facebook’s campaign against Apple’s anti-tracking initiatives ‘laughable’.
Apple has launched several initiatives to limit ad tracking across its ecosystem, something that Facebook objected against. The EFF sided with Apple and published an article on how Facebook’s campaign to stop the privacy changes from happening was a smokescreen to distract people from its ‘poor anticompetitive behavior and privacy issues’.
The AppTrackingTransparency feature is set to roll out on the iPadOS and iOS 14 and enables users to choose which 3rd party trackers are allowed to function. This gives the device owners greater control and knowledge and protects them from abuse.
The EFF has declared that the anti...

Journalists’ iPhones hacked with iMessage exploit
A number of journalists’ iPhones have been compromised following an iMessage vulnerability.
A Citizen Lab report from the Toronto University reveals that the operation began in July and August this year and was conducted by government agents. The target were news-gathering organizations’ executives, anchors, producers, and journalists.
The agents used a vulnerability titled ‘Kismet’, which is a Pegasus spyware that works within the iMessage app. The zero-click exploit was discovered in iOS 13.5.1 and other versions.
The attacks were believed to come from ‘Monarchy’ in Saudi Arabia and ‘Sneaky Kestrel’ in UAE. The Pegasus operators were rumored to be employed by the two countries’ crown princes.

A14 more powerful than Snapdragon 888 Chip in...
Chipmaker Qualcomm has outed test scores for its new Snapdragon 888 chip that will power the next-gen flagship Android phones next year. By comparison it’s revealed that the chip received a lower score than the A14 processor used in iPhone 12 models.
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 SoC benchmarks were put on a side-by-side with the A14, and the Apple chip won on both GFXBench and GeekBench 5 tests.
The Qualcomm chip had a 1,135 single core score and a 3,794 multi core score, whereas the A14 had a 1,603 single core score and a 4,187 multi core score. The GFXBench, which gauges GPU power the iPhone 12 Pro earned a 102.24 fps while Samsung received an 86 fps.
Sustained performance is largely an unknown and it’s rumored that the Snapdragon 888 can win over the A14 if it edges out the chip in power efficiency.
While the 888 chip may be inferior to the A14 it’s still a huge leap from earlier Snapdragon chips in flagship Android phones in terms of CPU and GPU...

Apple releases data protection safety guide
Apple has recently published a guide on how people can protect their personal data from other people.
Apple has been a proponent of privacy for some time now, with its latest endeavor being the integration of ‘nutrition labels’ on the App Store.
Now, the Cupertino-based company has published a document titled ‘Device and Data Access When Personal Safety is at Risk’, which explains all security options and how people can use them.
On Apple’s support site the description reads, ‘if you’re concerned that someone is accessing your information you did not share from your Apple device, this guide will also help you identify risks’. Furthermore, the text says that the guide can walk the individual through steps to make technology as secure and private as...

Concept: How Apple could differentiate the Apple TV...
Unlike the smartphone market, the streaming box market is chock full of competition. Apple joined the fray in 2007 with the first generation Apple TV but things didn’t really pick up until the second generation model in 2010. Along the way, Apple had to contend with new competitors like Roku, Amazon’s Fire streaming devices, Google’s TV efforts, and other smart TV operating systems like webOS on LG TVs. This isn’t even to mention indirect competition from game consoles like the Xbox and Playstation. In 2020, Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD are by far the most expensive streaming boxes. But unlike other Apple products, the Apple TV doesn’t do much to justify the premium.

Browser makers Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Mozilla, have banned a root certificate that was being used by the Kazakhstan government to intercept and decrypt HTTPS traffic for residents in the country's capital, the city of Nur-Sultan (formerly Astana). From a report: The certificate had been in use since December 6, 2020, when Kazakh officials forced local internet service providers to block Nur-Sultan residents from accessing foreign sites unless they had a specific digital certificate issued by the government installed on their devices. While users were able to access most foreign-hosted sites, access was blocked to sites like Google, Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and Netflix, unless they had the certificate installed. Kazakh officials justified their actions claiming they were carrying out a cybersecurity training exercise for government agencies, telecoms, and private companies. Officials cited that cyberattacks targeting "Kazakhstan's segment of the internet" grew 2...

In a note to clients — as noted by AppleInsider — Goldman Sachs analyst Rod Hall says Apple’s Mac revenues rose 50% year-over-year in the third quarter of 2020 as global PC (as in “personal computer,” not just Windows systems) unit shipments increased 18%.
Hall expects the current PC market strength to "at least partially persist" into the fourth quarter of 2020, and possibly into the first quarter of 2021 as global coronavirus lockdowns continue. He also thinks the M1 Macs will sell well.
Hall notes that desktop units appeared to be doing worse compared to 2019, with a -18% decrease. Notebooks sales, on the other hand, are booming. Sales of laptop devices were 36% higher in the third quarter year-over-year, beating Goldman Sachs estimates by 16%.

Dozens of Journalists' iPhones Hacked With NSO...
Citizen Lab researchers say they have found evidence that dozens of journalists had their iPhones silently compromised with spyware known to be used by nation states. From a report: For more than the past year, London-based reporter Rania Dridi and at least 36 journalists, producers and executives working for the Al Jazeera news agency were targeted with a so-called "zero-click" attack that exploited a now-fixed vulnerability in Apple's iMessage. The attack invisibly compromised the devices without having to trick the victims into opening a malicious link. Citizen Lab, the internet watchdog at the University of Toronto, was asked to investigate earlier this year after one of the victims, Al Jazeera investigative journalist Tamer Almisshal, suspected that his phone may have been hacked. In a technical report out Sunday and shared with TechCrunch, the researchers say they believe the journalists' iPhones were infected with the Pegasus spyware, developed by Israel-based NSO Group. iPhone 12 was the world’s best-selling 5G smartphone...
The iPhone 12 was the world’s best-selling 5G smartphone model in October despite a delayed launch, which resulted in only two weeks of sales during the month, according to Counterpoint Research.
The iPhone 12 Pro, which launched alongside the iPhone 12, was the second best-selling 5G model for the month, according to the research group’s monthly Market Pulse Service. The iPhone 12 and 12 Pro together captured close to one-fourth of the total 5G smartphone sales in October.
The iPhone 12 also entered the top 10 bestseller list of 5G devices for January-October 2020, attaining the seventh position. This is a “big achievement, considering the new iPhone series was available for only two weeks in October,” according to Counterpoint Research.

No, we won’t see an ‘Apple Car’ in 2021
I don’t buy it, but the Economic Daily News claims the long-rumored “Apple Car” is running at least two years ahead of schedule and will be released in the third quarter of 2021. The article cites “unnamed executives at Taiwanese manufacturers.”
“According to the executives of a major electric vehicle supply chain manufacturer, with the order shipment and assembly completed, dozens of Apple Car’s first prototype cars have been secretly tested on the road in California,” says the Economic Daily News. “It is expected that heavy shipments and business opportunities will be mature next year.”
Most pundits — including usually-accurate analyst Ming-Chi Kuo — have pegged a 2023 or later time table for such a vehicle to roll out. However, the Sellers Research Group (that’s me) doesn’t think Apple will ever make an...

Apple places its supplier Wiston on probation until...
Apple has placed its Taiwan-based supplier Wistron on probation following rioting at its plant in southern India, reports Reuters. The tech giant said it won’t award the contract manufacturer new business until it addressed the way workers were treated at its southern India plant.
Apple said Wistron had failed to implement proper working hour management processes, which “led to payment delays for some workers in October and November.” Reuters notes, on Saturday, that Wistron admitted some workers at the plant in Karnataka’s Narasapura had not been paid properly or on time, and it was removing a top executive overseeing its India business. Apple said it will continue to monitor Wistron’s progress on corrective action.
Serious violations of labor laws were taking place at the iPhone manufacturing facility in India where a workers’ protest on...

Not only will Apple likely be forced to share results of its investigations on what caused the riots at Wistron, but it may also be held at least partially liable for the damages and labor violations, according to India law.An image from a video showing the violence at the Wistron facility.Following the worker riots at the Wistron plant in Narasapura, India, state government authorities are expected to ask Apple to supply details from its investigations. Under Indian law, Apple is a contractor that is ultimately the employer, and so the government can call for explanations from both Apple and Wistron.

iMessage flaw saw journalist’s iPhones hacked in...
A suspected state-sponsored attack saw dozens of iPhones hacked by exploiting an iMessage vulnerability that remained unpatched for around a year. The attack was a so-called zero-click one because it didn’t require the victims to take any action: the hack was enabled simply by receiving a text message.
The victims of the attack were Al Jazeera journalists, and is believed to have been carried out on behalf of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates governments, using spyware developed by Israeli company NSO Group. It is suspected that these journalists are a ‘minuscule’ fraction of the iPhones hacked using this method …

Four ways Singapore is benefitting from its national...
By Victoria Duran III
Ever since the launch of its first wearable devices, Apple has shown a clear interest in promoting healthy lifestyles. As a result, apps like the Workout app have become one of the most popular applications among smartwatch users.
This philosophy has taken a step further in 2020. Apple has made history by announcing its first partnership with a country: Singapore. The result of this agreement is LumiHealth, a fitness app that promotes healthy habits among Singaporeans.
Singapore has the third longest life expectancy in the world. Singaporeans live up to 83 years old on average, and this number is increasing. So, it’s not surprising that the South East...

Apple’s most significant moves of 2020
Goodbye, 2020, we won’t miss you.
Looking back over the last 12 months, it’s clearly been eventful for Apple—and that’s even without taking a global pandemic into account. The company has been busy, especially in the fall product season, but as the year draws to a close, it’s time to cast a gimlet eye over all the decisions the Cupertino-based company has made and—as is our annual tradition—pick out the ones that will ultimately have the largest impact on its future.
There were almost too many to choose from this year, but looking at a larger theme, I think it would be about Apple deciding to stretch itself, make some choices that we wouldn’t necessarily consider very Apple-like. Even if, in the end, those decisions were perhaps the most Apple-like of all.

Here’s a good reason to add a protective case to your iPhone: Americans who have dropped their smartphones on the sidewalk or into a swimming pool are far from alone. A new survey by Allstate Protection Plans found that 140 million Americans have damaged a smartphone at some point in their lives, with 87 million having a mishap in the past 12 months.
The Allstate Protection Plans Mobile Mythconceptions Study looked at the common causes of smartphone damage, along with consumers’ attitudes toward repairing and replacing their phones. It found that while Americans believe only 43% of smartphone owners have had an accident that required repair, 61% have actually had damage that needed repairs.
In the past year, damaged screens (45%) led the list of most common types of smartphone damage. Battery failure (19%) was second, with damaged corners and sides coming in third (13%). Other study highlights:

AirPods Max battery life questions answered
Apple launched its flagship and the only wireless headphones AirPods Max, earlier this year. The wireless headphones cost $549 – super expensive in the consumer section of wireless audio equipment. While the price is something that made reviewers mark it as a negative, there was another issue: the AirPods Max would not turn off unless they are placed inside the case provided by Apple.
It’s important to note that, even when placed inside the Smart Case that comes with the AirPods Max, the headphones do not actually power off but instead go into a low power mode. Initially, Apple only said that when placed inside the case, the AirPods Max would go into ultra-low-power state.
Updated support page offers details
Everyone in the review business and tech enthusiasts alike wondered what would happen if Apple’s wireless headphones were not to be placed inside the case. To answer all the questions, Apple updated its support page for the same matter...

Apple Pay could come under scrutiny from regulators
Launched in 2014, Apple Pay has begun to grow at an exponential rate. The payment service by Apple only works on the devices made by the company. The goal with Apple Pay is to offer a seamless payment experience using fingerprint or facial recognition as authorization methods.
According to Apple Insider, Apple Pay has grown heavily since the beginning of the global coronavirus pandemic. Past few months and years as well, have been all about regulators taking a hard look at big tech companies. It appears that all of regulators’ eyes are on Apple again for the way in which it runs Apple Pay.
Apple users are reportedly “motivated” to use Apple’s own methods such as Apple Card or Apple Pay Cash. The company launched its own credit card by the name of “Apple Card” in partnership with Goldman Sachs as its banking partner while Mastercard took over the payment network.
According to Apple Insider, Apple “minimizes” other payment...
