Walmart Begins Selling the Mac For the First Time

Walmart is teaming up with Apple to sell the Mac for the first time. From a report: In a press release today, the company said that it is now selling the base model M1 MacBook Air online and in select stores for $699. The move comes a week after Apple introduced the new M3 MacBook Air and stopped selling the M1 MacBook Air itself. While Walmart has historically sold Apple devices like the iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch, it has never sold Macs directly. Instead, it's relied on third-party partners to sell the Mac through its online marketplace.

HomeKit Weekly: eufyCam 2C is the most affordable (...

I’ve been a big proponent of HomeKit cameras built into flood lights as they eliminate the need to get an additional wire or rely on batteries. Sometimes, you want to put a camera somewhere that isn’t easy to wire. HomeKit battery cameras have come a long way in terms of reliability, though. I recently picked up the to augment a few areas outside my home that I wanted coverage of but didn’t want to fool with running wires.

Apple, Investors Reach $490 Million Settlement in...

Apple reached a $490 million settlement of a class-action lawsuit brought by a group of investors who accused Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook of misleading them in 2018 about the company's sales prospects. From a report: Cook made false statements about the company's business in China that caused Apple stock to trade at artificially inflated prices, the investors said in their complaint, which alleged violation of securities laws. Lawyers disclosed the proposed settlement in a request for judicial approval filed Friday in federal court in Oakland, California. The settlement comes as Apple continues to face headwinds in China, where iPhone sales fell by a surprising 24% over the first six weeks of this year, according to independent research released earlier this month. Attorneys for the investors described the settlement as the third-largest securities class-action recovery in the district's history.

The class action lawsuit accusing Tim Cook of misleading investors over falling sales in China has been settled for half a billion dollars.

Tim Cook's comment cost Apple $61 million per word
It's now almost six years since Tim Cook confirmed in a late 2018 earnings call that there were countries where iPhone sales were down, but "I would not put China in that category." However, within days of the call, Apple allegedly then told suppliers to reduce production.

Then in early 2019, Apple took the unusual step of revising its revenue guidance down because of lower iPhone sales in China.

While you probably already know that you can use the iPhone Wallet app to store credit and debit cards, you can also use it to store reward cards and membership cards. Here's how to do it.

Like most of us, you've probably amassed dozens of membership and rewards cards over the years. And, if you're like most of us, you always seem to misplace the cards when you need them the most.

Instead of spending all your time rifling through your wallet, purse, or bag, take the time to add your rewards cards to the Wallet App.

While some rewards cards will allow you to add them to your iPhone via an in-app prompt automatically, or with the click of a button on the company's website, many cards are unsupported. For those cards, there's a relatively easy workaround.

My personal disdain for social media is clear. Should I ever leave AppleInsider, I will light my social media presences on fire, and walk away without looking at the explosion. In the short-term, I don't allow my children to have accounts right now — and for now, they know that I will find out if they do.

I take these measures because I believe that social media is a force for both good and evil, with a tilt towards the latter in the last 10 years. What mostly started as a quick way to share cat pictures and user statuses, has evolved to be so much more.

How to change your default browser in macOS Sonoma

Not everybody wants to use Safari, the Mac's default web browser, but switching completely to another one looks difficult — until you know how.

There are many browsers available on macOS, and it's always worth setting your preferred browser as your default.
Using a browser that isn't set to your default on macOS can be an enormous pain. There are few things more annoying than trying to open a link from Messages, only for it to open up in a browser you don't use.

Within macOS Sonoma, making the change can be quick and easy. Depending on the browser you want to make your default, you may not even have to take a trip to System Settings.

There are 12 languages in Apple Vision Pro code that could indicate Apple's plans for expanding the product's availability, but it could also mean nothing.

Apple Vision Pro launched in the United States and nowhere else on February 2. Rumors suggest Apple could begin a global rollout before WWDC, but no official news has been revealed.

Code sleuths at MacRumors believe that code in visionOS may hint at Apple's upcoming global Apple Vision Pro release. The twelve languages represent obvious options across the world including Japan, Korea, Australia, Canada, the UK...

Sleek, loaded with ports and power: iVANKY...

I’m a huge fan of Apple’s new MacBook lineup, but there is one problem for creative professionals – we need more ports! For my at-home workstation, I use a ton of devices, including multiple monitors, video editing peripherals, speakers, and a number of other accessories – and to turn all of this chaos into one sleek and organized workspace, the iVANKY FusionDock Max 1 is the absolute best solution I’ve found. Packed with 20 ports, it comes with two Thunderbolt 4 chips and is the first and only docking station that lets you set up four monitors at a time.

M3 MacBook Air is easy to take apart, but parts...

A teardown of the M3 MacBook Air may as well be a teardown of the M2 model with some labels swapped.

M3 MacBook Air didn't change much from the M2
Apple's M3 MacBook Air is the second generation with the new case design. The 13-inch and 15-inch models are nearly identical in construction minus differences in speakers and other minor components.

A teardown video from iFixit shows the M3 MacBook Air, in either size, is simple enough to take apart with the right screwdriver. The lack of a lot of glue and tape is a nice change from Apple's Intel era, and modular components show that times are changing.

Epic Says Apple Violated App Store Injunction, Seeks...

Epic Games, which makes the popular video game "Fortnite," on Wednesday accused Apple of violating an injunction governing its lucrative App Store, and asked a U.S. judge to hold Apple in contempt and end its "sham" compliance. From a report: A September 2021 injunction by U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in Oakland, California, let developers provide links and buttons that direct consumers to other means to pay for digital content.

In a filing with the California court, Epic alleged that Apple is in "blatant violation" of that injunction, despite the Cupertino, California-based company's assurance in a Jan. 16 court notice that it had "fully complied." Epic said Apple has imposed new rules and a new 27% fee on developers for some purchases, which taken together make the links "commercially unusable." The Cary, North Carolina-based developer also said Apple continues to "categorically prohibit" buttons, and still forbids some apps from telling users they have...

Apple has been granted a patent for technology that could bring displays and controls to the sides of devices like the iPhone or iPad.

This patent illustration shows potential locations Apple could add displays and tactile controls.
Apple's patent might sound similar to the edge-to-edge curved displays found on some Android devices, but it differs in scope and application.

The aptly named Motorola Edge+ is one example of curved-bevel screens in the Android ecosystem. However, the edges of the displays are used to extend content more and less to control various phone functions.

The Epic versus Apple saga continues to stretch on, as Epic has requested federal intervention after accusing Apple of failing to remove anti-steering measures how it wanted them to.

Apple refutes criticism of its carbon neutral plans...

Aiming to show that its carbon reduction efforts are not mere "climate-washing," Apple has spotlighted how its Restore Fund is contributing to the restoration of a Brazilian rainforest, and attempts to save over 3,000 types of tree from extinction.

Workers on Apple's Restore Fund project use iPhone apps to help
The Restore Fund was launched in 2021 as a partnership between Apple, Goldman Sachs, and Conservation International. It was originally a $200 million carbon removal initiative, but then in 2023, Apple doubled that to $400 million as part of its plans to go entirely carbon neutral.

Now Apple has highlighted how one specific result of its Restore Fund is being seen in South America's Atlantic Forest. Of...

Months later, one of his workers who had been using the car, told him that it had been stolen. "I started shaking, I couldn't believe it as the car is my pride and joy," said Conway.

Keychron Q1 Max review: cushy, comfortable, costly

The Keychron Q1 Max is a 75% mechanical keyboard filled to the brim with foam with a smooth typing experience, featuring exclusive — and pricey — Gateron Jupiter switches and a 1,000 Hz polling rate.

Keychron Q1 Max review
Keychron is not slowing down as it keeps shipping iterations of its popular keyboard lineup. The Q1 Max is the most premium model, with more foam, better switches, and more MCU storage for developers.

It's becoming more difficult to score Keychron because a numerical system with only nine options isn't exactly granular. Their keyboards consistently score well, and the Q1 Max is no different.
