How to transfer files when AirDrop isn't working

If you want to transfer an image or other file to someone on Apple devices nearby, AirDrop is usually the easiest way to go. Yet it sometimes just stops working for no obvious reason. For those situations, here are the best alternatives.

AirDrop is a great feature for quick-and-easy file transfer with another Apple device on your home or other shared Wi-Fi, or are out and about but your recipient is nearby. As of iOS 17.1 and macOS Sonoma, AirDrop has recently gained the ability to continue a transfer even if the parties go their separate ways.

All participants need to be signed into iCloud, but as of...

Apple's focus on local AI models and licensing...

An analyst note suggests licensing Gemini from Google while developing proprietary private local models could give Apple an advantage in the AI race.

Apple's AI push seems to have a two-pronged approach
It's no secret that Apple plans to make 2024 a big year for promoting AI technologies on its platforms. Recent reports have begun to give Apple's AI plans a shape, and they look similar to other strategies the company has employed in the past.

According to a JP Morgan note viewed by AppleInsider, Apple's potential partnership with an LLM provider while developing smaller local models may help it get ahead of other manufacturers. If the reports prove true, Apple will focus on its strengths, like on-device processing, instead...

Entirely accurate 3D-printed Mac Plus built in these...

Enlarge (credit: Kevin Noki)

Have you ever worked on a hobby project where modifying and compiling the source code for a Linux-based emulator was possibly the easiest and most straightforward part of the whole thing?

Kevin Noki really, really wanted a functioning Macintosh Plus, complete with a functioning, auto-ejecting disk drive that it could boot from. The German maker already had a Mac Plus (1Mb) from eBay, but it had both a busted power supply and floppy drive. Rather than carve out the busted Plus' one-of-a-kind internals and slap a Raspberry Pi in there like some DIY slacker, Noki went … a different path.

47 minutes and 25 seconds of a tour-de-force of modern maker technology.

EU antitrust chief ready to get on Apple's case...

The Digital Markets Act forced companies like Apple to open up opportunities for more competition, but the legislation has resulted in new problems with monetization and security concerns.

Apple's compliance with the DMA may not satisfy regulators
Apple's problems with the Digital Markets Act have only just begun as regulators scrutinize every inch of the company's compliance efforts. It seems there may be some concern that Apple is trying to drive developers away from the new contract options.

An interview conducted by Reuters with the EU's antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager revealed that key portions of company's compliance with the DMA will be under investigation. Apple...

Apple gradually releases new firmware for the AirTag

Apple has started to roll out a brand new firmware for the AirTag, making it the first update for the compact tracker since October.

An Apple AirTag
The latest firmware, version 2.0.73 and build number 2A73, will be eventually introduced to all AirTags worldwide, but with a typically slow rollout.

Much like the last update, only a small percentage, close to one percent, will get the update on the first day. Higher percentages of AirTags will be allowed to download and install the firmware over the course of several weeks.

Apple Working on Solution for App Store Fee That...

Joe_Dragon shares a report: Since Apple announced plans for the 0.50 euro Core Technology Fee that apps distributed using the new EU App Store business terms must pay, there have been ongoing concerns about what that fee might mean for a developer that suddenly has a free app go viral. Apple's VP of regulatory law Kyle Andeers today met with developers during a workshop on Apple's Digital Markets Act compliance. iOS developer Riley Testut, best known for Game Boy Advance emulator GBA4iOS, asked what Apple would do if a young developer unwittingly racked up millions in fees.

Testut explained that when he was younger, that exact situation happened to him. Back in 2014 as an 18-year-old high school student, he released GBA4iOS outside of the App Store using an enterprise certificate. The app was unexpectedly downloaded more than 10 million times, and under Apple's new rules with Core Technology Fee, Testut said that would have cost $5 million euros, bankrupting his family. He...

The short 30-second ad shows a man considering deleting some of his photos, but they cry out "don't let go" as the song with the same title plays. The message — iPhone 15 has "lots of storage for lots of photos."

Apple's WWDC is just a couple months away

Apple has told an official hearing of the European Commission that it has fully complied with the new Digital Markets Act, despite complaints from rivals.

Apple claims that it is in compliance with EU DMA
Now that the Digital Markets Act is fully in force in the European Union, EU regulators have the power to investigate compliance and, if necessary, fine Big Tech companies who are in breach of the new laws. In a hearing at the European Commission, Apple has been putting its position and refuting criticisms from rivals.

Four years after launch, Apple Arcade is here to...

Over four years after its debut, Apple Arcade has beaten the expectations of critics, and Apple Arcade chief Alex Rofman believes Apple's strategy for the service will continue to do so for a while longer.

Apple Arcade
Apple Arcade is soon to hit its fifth anniversary. It started off on shaky footing with naysayers believing it wouldn't survive for long.

Like it or not, it has become a fantastic value for gamers on Apple platforms. It's an even better one when combined with an Apple One subscription, and shared across and entire family's devices.

New Apple AI training method retains privacy, and...

Apple researchers have hit on a new multi-modal method of quickly training large language models (LLMs) that can enable more flexible and powerful machine-learning and "AI" type systems.

A research paper posted by the company to research site arxiv.org earlier this week revealed that Apple has used what it calls a "careful mix" of image-caption, interleaved image-text, and text-only data to train LLMs. The mix of visual and language data allowed the models to handle tasks like intelligently captioning images or infer natural-language meanings.

As part of the research, it was determined that the choice of image encoder and the resolution of images it processes has a big impact on performance, more than the design of the vision-language connector.

In one instance, using a 30-billion-parameter MM1 model, it was found that there were strong in-...

Apple Acquires Startup DarwinAI As AI Efforts Ramp Up

Macworld reports: Apple has reportedly folded the DarwinAI staff into its own AI team, including DarwinAI co-founder Alexander Wong, an AI researcher at the University of Waterloo who "has published over 600 refereed journal and conference papers, as well as patents, in various fields such as computational imaging, artificial intelligence, computer vision, and multimedia systems."

According to its LinkedIn profile, DarwinAI is "a rapidly growing visual quality inspection company providing manufacturers an end-to-end solution to improve product quality and increase production efficiency." In layman's terms, that means Apple is likely interested in DarwinAI to streamline its manufacturing to be more efficient. That's something that could save Apple a ton of money in annual costs.

Far more interesting to our consumer devices, however, is Bloomberg's report that DarwinAI's...
