Apple TV+ Wolfwalkers, a rich, densely packed visual...

Glen Weldon, NPR:

Wolfwalkers, from Cartoon Saloon, the production company behind 2009’s The Secret of Kells and 2014’s Song of the Sea, isn’t made for kids. Or at least, not just for kids.

Because there are a lot of other thematic elements jostling for elbow room in this tale of young English girl Robyn (voiced by Honor Kneafsey) and her father (voiced by Sean Bean) trying to make a go of it in the pre-colonial Irish town of Kilkenny.

And:

Layered over the anti-authoritarian theme is an ecological one: The town is growing, and Robyn’s father has been hired by the Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell (voiced by Simon McBurney) to clear the wolves out of the rapidly vanishing forest nearby. There’s a healthy dose of feminism in the mix, as well: Robyn only wants to help her father hunt, but her status as a young woman gets her consigned to menial scullery duties. You don’t have to scratch the film’s surface terribly hard to find a queer reading, either: Robyn...

Going all in on the Mac App Store

Unbound for Mac blog:

With the announcement of the App Store Small Business Program, I’ve stopped selling Unbound directly via the web site. I thought it would be worth explaining how I came to that decision.

This is an interesting read, mostly for developers, but also for folks interested in Apple’s business practices.

If you sell a Mac app, you likely either sell it on the Mac App Store or via an eCommerce engine like Paddle. The economics are a big part of the “how to sell” decision.

Paddle takes a much smaller cut than Apple, but requires a time and coding investment. Apple’s move to cut their end for small (under $1M) sellers from 30% to 15% definitely has an impact on the overall math.

Paddle gives you the freedom to update your app when you like, no approval necessary. Apple, obviously, has hoops to jump through, including a notarization process, and restrictions on content.

Paddle makes it easy to do demos, offer coupon codes, etc...

HomeKit isn't ready yet for your front door

Smart video doorbells equipped with HomeKit Secure Video are just now starting to hit the market. While they offer many great features and deep integration into Apple's smart home platform, they are still plagued by inadequacies. Logitech Circle View Wired DoorbellHomeKit Secure Video was a bold move for HomeKit. It became the first HomeKit feature that cost users money, requiring users to pay $2.99 or $9.99 for either 200GB or 2TB of storage, enabling up to five cameras to record ten days of footage to iCloud. Users weren't required to use any third-party apps or rely on any third-party cloud servers. This inherently made putting cameras in your home more secure and less risky.

Merry Christmas from Apple World Today

Photo by Ben White via Unsplash

It’s been a tough year. Many of our readers experienced loneliness and isolation, job loss, and fear. Some came down with COVID-19, others watched and worried as relatives or friends contracted the novel coronavirus. The staff here at Apple World Today would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and hope for a much better 2021.

We’ll be with our friends and family on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and hope that our readers are also able to enjoy some time with others, even if it is “socially distanced” while wearing a mask.

Maybe one good thing can come out of 2020: with less emphasis on shopping and rank consumerism this holiday season, perhaps some of our readers can reflect on the true meaning of Christmas. This is a Christian holiday celebrating the birth...

There may not have been the new 2020 iMac we'd hoped for, but Apple was rarely out of the headlines in July, with a series of controversies, an unimaginable amount of cash — and a surprising number of launches.L-R: "The Underdogs", US House of Judiciary, :Greyhound"We're all used to Apple being the most profitable company in the world, and most of us believe its repeated claim that it doesn't put money first. But in July 2020, we reached a true financial milestone for Apple: Tim Cook actually seemed a bit embarrassed how much money they'd made. Perhaps he was, perhaps he already had been in June 2020, but it was in July when he was required to speak publicly about the vast amounts of cash Apple has.

Tell me this doesn’t look like an Apple ad

[VIDEO] This ad (embedded in main Loop post) dropped last month, an homage to Signing in the Rain, but designed to sell Burberry product.

I love this ad, wonder how much of this is CGI, how much practical effects. No matter, to me, has all the feel of an Apple ad.

Side note: In the original Singing in the Rain, linked above, that’s Carrie Fisher’s mom at the beginning of the scene.

How Amazon wins: By steamrolling rivals and partners

Dana Mattioli, Wall Street Journal:

Jeff Bezos built Amazon.com Inc. from his garage with an underdog’s ambition to take on the establishment. He imbued staff with an obsession to grow fast by grabbing customers using the biggest selection and lowest prices.

And:

That ethos helps keep Amazon booming. Aggressive competition—including wresting market share from rivals—is often a hallmark of a successful business. It’s also why the tech-and-retail giant is the target of rivals, regulators and politicians who say its tactics are unfair for a company its size, and potentially illegal. As the company has grown, so has its capacity to take on an ever-growing array of competitors.

And:

Executives behind the scenes have methodically waged targeted campaigns against rivals and partners alike—an approach that has changed little through the years, from diapers to footwear.

No competitor is too small to draw Amazon’s sights. It cloned a line of camera...

Facebook vs Apple: Facebook employees complain about...

Buzzfeed News:

Last Tuesday, Facebook launched what it portrayed as a full-throated defense of small businesses. In taking out full-page ads in major newspapers and creating a webpage encouraging people to “Speak Up for Small Businesses,” the social networking giant argued that a change in Apple’s mobile operating system would decimate family-run enterprises by preventing them from targeting people with online ads.

But:

But while the $750 billion company’s public relations effort has presented a united front with small businesses, some Facebook employees complained about what they called a self-serving campaign that bordered on hypocrisy, according to internal comments and audio of a presentation to workers that were obtained by BuzzFeed News.

And:

“It feels like we are trying to justify doing a bad thing by hiding behind people with a sympathetic message,” one engineer wrote in response to an internal post about the campaign from Dan Levy,...

Apple is reportedly booting ‘thousands’ of apps from...

Apple is booting thousands of video game apps from its platform in China as the government clamps down harder on such content, “illustrating the tech giant’s vulnerability to state pressure on its business,” according to The Wall Street Journal.

Apple warned Chinese developers that a new wave of paid gaming apps are at risk of removal from its app store, according to a memo viewed by The Wall Street Journal, after the company removed thousands of such apps earlier this year.

Four years ago the Chinese government four years ago began requiring videogames to be licensed before being released, but developers were able to skirt the requirement in the App Store. The Wall Street Journal says Apple hasn’t said why the loophole existed or why the company began closing it this year.

The tech giant...

As noted by MacRumors, Apple has begun ontacting eligible developers to inform them that they’ve been accepted into the Small Business Program.

The tech giant announced the program in November, saying it’s designed “to accelerate innovation and help small businesses and independent developers propel their businesses forward with the next generation of groundbreaking apps on the App Store.”

Apple CEO Tim Cook says the new App Store Small Business Program will benefit the vast majority of developers who sell digital goods and services on the store, providing them with a reduced commission on paid apps and in-app purchases. Developers can qualify for the program and a reduced, 15% commission if they earned up to $1 million in proceeds during the previous calendar year.

Apple looks into self-mixing 2D/2D user input...

Apple has been granted a patent (number 10,871,820) for a “self-mixing 2D/2D user input detection, scanning laser system.” If its ideas ever reach fruition, Macs, iPads, iPhones, and other future devices such as projectors from the company could allow user input based on a built-in scanning system.

Current put devices include buttons, keyboards, touch screens, and the like which often involve the user making physical contact with the input device, such as with a finger, stylus, or other user input object. Apple says that such input devices are often integrated components of the electronic devices, and so add weight, size, and power consumption to the electronic devices.

The tech giant adds that, furthermore,, such input devices typically only allow for detecting a press, or motion of a touch, in two dimensions on the device. They typically don’t allow for detecting distance or gestures of the finger, stylus, or other input object toward or...

Seven tips to take away from Apple’s customer service

By Elea Andrea Almazora

There’s a reason why Apple is one of the most recognizable and popular brands worldwide. They’ve always done things their own way. When someone mentions Apple, the usual suspects come to mind, like iPhones, multi-purpose watches, MacBooks, and now the rumored Apple Glasses.

Apple has always represented quality and sophistication. While the products take the limelight, there’s a much less glamorous piece of the puzzle behind its business growth - it’s unrivalled customer service.

Every single employee has bought into it, which has taken time. It’s a meticulously crafted strategy. But that’s not to say businesses...

How to restore a previous version of your Pages,...

One of the most powerful additions to one’s computing arsenal that arrived in the early 2000s was automatic saving, particularly incremental saves that happened quietly and continuously. This means you don’t lose your work in progress between saves. But how can you bring back both explicit saves (Command-S or File > Save) and incremental automatic saves?

Apple offers a built-in feature for its document-focused apps, like Pages and Numbers, and a framework that some other developers tie into as well. You find it in File > Revert To > Browse All Versions. It resembles Time Machine, but doesn’t require that you are using a Time Machine backup.
