Once you set it up, it's as simple as holding your iPhone 12 up to the magnetic mount and letting it snap into place. You can prop up your iPhone in either portrait or landscape orientation, and it also wirelessly charges it.

Apple is booting thousands of videogame apps [Editor's note: the link may be paywalled; alternative source] from its platform in China as the government clamps down harder on such content, illustrating the tech giant's vulnerability to state pressure on its business. From a report: The iPhone maker this month warned Chinese developers that a new wave of paid gaming apps are at risk of removal from its app store, according to a memo viewed by The Wall Street Journal, after the company removed thousands of such apps earlier this year. The Chinese government four years ago began requiring videogames to be licensed before being released, but developers were able to skirt the requirement in Apple's app store. Apple hasn't said why the loophole existed or why the company began closing it this year. Foreign software developers lament the change, citing difficulty securing approval in China for their games.

iOS 14.4 shows Privacy-Centric Tracking Prompts
Apple has recently implemented app tracking prompts that are centered around users’ privacy on iOS beta 14.4.
iPad and iPhone app developers are expected to implement permission requests to track user activity. On iOS 14 some users are already seeing the changes within the 14.4 version.
Just last week Facebook claims that Apple’s new policy is hurting small businesses, and was aimed more towards profit than privacy. Facebook has gone so far as to put in a full-page ad that accuses the company of making small businesses pay more and pad to Apple’s bottom line.
In response, Apple mentioned that the privacy feature was for users, who deserve greater transparency and control. Furthermore, the Cupertino-based company said it was about ‘standing up for our users’ and that they deserve to know when their data is being shared or collected to other entities.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation recently applauded Apple for its efforts and calls Facebook’s campaign...

Just a few days ago developers were being notified that they qualify for the App Store Business Program, which lowers the commission cost in the App Store by 15%.

Best USB-C power adapters for the iPhone 12: How to...
If you’ve ordered a new iPhone 12, you’ll notice that the box is a whole lot slimmer than in previous years. That’s because the bulkiest accessory is gone: the power adapter. In fact, Apple has removed the charger from all iPhones it sells, so whether you’re spending $399 on an iPhone SE or $1,399 on a maxed-out iPhone 12 Pro Max, you need to bring your own charger.
Any old charger and Lightning cable you have lying around will work, of course. But if you’ve been using Apple’s old 5W adapter, it’s a perfect time to upgrade. For the first time, Apple is supplying a USB-C-to-Lightning cable in all iPhone boxes to allow for fast charging, so all you need is the right charger.

Should you buy the iPad Pro (2020)?
Apple updated its iPad Pro earlier this year by including a new faster A12Z Bionic chip and a slew of features such as the addition of LiDAR sensor and an ultra-wide camera. The iPad Pro continues to be the top of the line iPad with a starting price tag of $799 for the base model.
The iPad Pro features an almost all-screen design on the front and it comes in two versions: 11-inch and 12.9-inch. The major news this year was the introduction of Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro. The new keyboard magnetically attaches to the iPad Pro and offers almost laptop-like functionality with a trackpad and keyboard. The keyboard also makes the iPad Pro float in the air like the screen of an iMac.

Updated Apple TV to launch in 2021
Rumours of Apple releasing a new updated Apple TV have been flying around for a very long time now. Bloomberg’s noted Apple news reporter Mark Gurman has stated in a report that Apple is indeed working on a new Apple TV which will feature a new remote along with some more changes.
The new Apple TV when released will reportedly feature a faster processor on the inside. Some reports have suggested that the next Apple TV will pack the same A14 Bionic chip found in the iPhone 12 models and the 2020 iPad Air. The current generation Apple TV 4K still uses the years old A10X which is starting to show its age.
New remote and renewed emphasis on gaming
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman wrote in his Full Charged newsletter that the upcoming Apple TV will focus on gaming as well. Apple has begun pushing its devices for gaming as well with its gaming service which launched late last year. Apple Arcade is the company’s subscription based gaming service which...

Mac Pro, Coronavirus, and Apple TV+ awards - January...
What a difference a year makes. Apple began 2019 as a technology company but it's started January 2020 as a television, news, gaming and financial firm too — and it may be that mix that meant it would not only cope with the coronavirus of 2020, but grow even bigger.January 2020 for Apple. L-R: Rack-mounted Mac Pro, Jennifer Aniston in "The Morning Show", and the CoronavirusAt a casual glance, Apple was facing much the same issues in January 2020 as it was a year before. There were problems for the company with China, it was at the center of multiple controversies, and it didn't exhibit at the Consumer Electronics Show. Yet if there were familiar issues, still the Apple of January 2020 was not the same company that it was in January 2019.

Elon Musk says he tried to sell Tesla to Apple
Earlier this week, Reuters reported that Apple is building a car which is set to go into production by 2024. In response to the news, electric car maker Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that he had requested a meeting with Apple CEO Tim Cook a few years ago to sell the car company. Musk added that Tim Cook refused to take the meeting.
Tesla went through a rough period with the production of its slightly budget friendly Model 3. It was reportedly at the same time when Musk wished to discuss the possibility of Apple acquiring the company for 1/10th the current value of Tesla.
Musk questions the surfaced reports
The reports of Apple building a new electric car with an advanced battery technology, made Tesla CEO Elon Musk question the “nature” of the technology. There are a lot of questions regarding the rumoured Apple Car and as to whether it will ever actually be produced is the big question.

Should you buy the new iPad Air (2020)?
Apple updated the iPad Air with a new all-screen design this year. The company unveiled the new design at its September event which also included the introduction of new Apple Watch(es) and the company’s new subscription based fitness service.
The new iPad Air features a design akin to the iPad Pro. However, the bezels on the new iPad Air are slightly thicker compared to the iPad Pro’s as it is priced lower than the iPad Pro. The new iPad Air starts at $599 (USD) whereas the iPad Pro continues to cost $799 for the base model.
Major new improvements
On the front, Apple packs a 10.9” display on the iPad Air with a resolution of 2360×1640. The screen has 264 pixels per inch (ppi) with support for P3 wide color gamut. Should you buy the new $329 iPad (10.2″)?
Apple updated the standard budget-friendly 10.2” iPad at its September event. The device now packs a much faster A12 Bionic chip compared to the previous generation’s A10X which was starting to show its age. Apart from that, the company has not changed much about the iPad. The new model does ship with a faster USB-C 20W charger whereas the previous generation model used to ship with a much slower 12W charger. However, the connector on the 10.2” iPad still remains to be a Lightning connector; it ships with a Lightning to USB-C cable.
The iPad still packs the same Retina Display with a resolution of 2160×1620 with a ppi (pixels per inch) of 264. The display on the iPad is fantastic for casual day to day use, however it still is not a laminated display as the one found on the higher end models such as the iPad Air or iPad Pro. Having a laminated display, reduces the gap between the glass and the display, making content on the screen look much better. However, packing a...

Apple Car could be services-supporting, says analyst
Apple Car is once again in the news as Reuters appears to have gained some information from sources. However, Goldman Sachs analyst Rod Hall believes that Apple Car could be a “services-supporting” product instead of a regular car. Apple has years of experience in building hardware and software but has also recently invested heavily in services as well.
Goldman Sachs analyst says that Apple has expertise in building “battery technology” for its tech products such as the iPhone, the iPad, and the Mac. He also adds that the company has experience in managing power across its products which could turn out to be an advantage for Apple in building a battery powered car.
“Given the potentially low profit opportunity for Apple, a key question in our opinion is why Apple is attracted to autos,” writes Hall. Major automakers struggle to survive; Tesla struggled for years to stay afloat in the very competitive auto industry.

Apple Car set to launch in 2024, suggests report
Apple has been rumoured to be working on its own car for years (eons?) now. For some time, it was also reported that the company had ditched the idea of building a car. However, a report from Reuters, suggests that the tech company is once again planning to sell its own car in the market.
The codename for the Apple car was Project Titan with rumours having begun to fly around since 2014. The project was reportedly headed by Apple’s former head of hardware engineering Bob Mansfield who took up a smaller role in day-to-day operations starting 2013. Another report which surfaced two weeks ago, suggested that the car project is now being headed by Artificial Intelligence (AI) chief John Giannandrea.

Apple investing heavily in India to ramp up local...
Apple suffered from minor issues when its iPhone assembly partner Wistron did not pay its Bangalore plant workers on time. Angered by lack of wages and low wages in some cases while being forced to work overtime, the workers took to violence. The Wistron plant at Bangalore saw around 2,000 workers turn cars upside down, break glass panes, and steal iPhones.
The issue is being investigated thoroughly by the police and Apple is also investigating the matter on its own. Wistron fired its top level official as a result of the violence outpour and has promised to improve matters. The manufacturer has also begun working on setting up help centers in all major languages that workers can visit in case of any problems.
Major partners already at work

Mac market share continues to grow
The Mac business continues to grow as Apple has released decent machines in the last few months since 2016. Not to say that all the Macs in the last four years were bad but they had major flaws. Also, the fact that most people are staying and working from home has resulted in people buying more Mac computers. As a result, the revenue of the Mac has risen by 50% year-over-year in Q3 of 2020.
The MacBook Pro packed a butterfly keyboard which in many cases would stop working with even a small amount of dust settling in. The MacBook Air’s design required the CPU to throttle while the fan inside was only cosmetic and did not serve any purpose, as said by many tech experts. The 15” MacBook Pro was too thin to dissipate heat and, similar to the MacBook Air, did not have a proper cooling system.
The Mac is great again!
Things started to change for the Mac when Apple launched the 16” MacBook Pro in 2019. It fixed most of the major flaws of the 15” MacBook Pro. The...

Apple working on 3nm chips for 2022 Mac, iPad, iPhone
This year, Apple announced its plan to move away from Intel chips to using its own silicon in the Mac. The MacBook Air, the base model 13” MacBookPro, and the Mac Mini are the first three consumer Macs to be powered by Apple’s first chip for the Mac – M1. However, Apple appears to be already gearing up for 3nm chips for its future products.
GSMArena reports that Apple has begun charting out a plan for the next generation 3nm chips with its chip manufacturing partner TSMC. According to the report, Apple has already “secured” a major portion of the orders for 3nm chips scheduled to be manufactured in 2022.
A generational leap towards efficiency
The 3nm chips will be used in the upcoming iPads and Macs, adds GSMArena. At present, the Mac and the iPad are at their closest – there are so many similarites. Earlier this year, Apple updated the iPad Pro with a modified A12Z chip. Few months after that, the company released a Developer Transition Kit (...

Facebook Managers Trash Their Own Ad Targeting In...
An anonymous reader quotes a report from The Intercept: Facebook is currently waging a PR campaign purporting to show that Apple is seriously injuring American small businesses through its iOS privacy features. But at the same time, according to allegations in recently unsealed court documents, Facebook has been selling them ad targeting that is unreliable to the point of being fraudulent. The documents feature internal Facebook communications in which managers appear to admit to major flaws in ad targeting capabilities, including that ads reached the intended audience less than half of the time they were shown and that data behind a targeting criterion was "all crap." Facebook says the material is presented out of context.
They emerged from a suit currently seeking class-action certification in federal court. The suit was filed by the owner of Investor Village, a small business that operates a message board on financial topics. Investor Village said in court filings that it...

Apple giving away Black Lives Matter murals on...
Apple has recently announced that protective plywood will be used to preserve Black Lives Matter murals painted around its Apple Pioneer Place location and saved for ‘future donation’.
Pioneer Place had its glass windows smashed on May 30 as part of the unrest in Portland. The Cupertino-based company had to put up plywood boards to keep people from getting in. Then, an artist named Emma Berger painted Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd portraits on the boards, along with other community artists. Berger is also known for having a social media profile named Flat Rabbit Studio.
Apple says that today it will put protective plywood over the Black Lives Matter...

Apple to address M1 Mac ultrawide resolution issue...
A new support document uploaded on the official Apple website reveals that the company intends to put out a fix regarding resolution issues plaguing M1 Macs connected to ultrawide displays.
The error occurs when an ultrawide monitor is connected to the M1 Mac. Some resolutions that the display should be able to handle were not on the list of available options.
Apple acknowledges the bug and has promised to get the issue fixed with the next macOS update. However, a specific date has not been detailed.
Just last week the macOS 11.2 beta version was seeded to the public, and it could contain the code needed to unlock ultrawide display resolutions.
M1 Mac users can check the resolution their machines could run by clicking the Apple logo, opening System Preferences then Displays and finally holding and clicking the...

Apple begins notifying developers of Small Business...
Apple has recently begun letting developers know that they have been accepted for the App Store Small Business Program.
The App Store Small Business Program allows developers to get reduced App Store fees. Announced in November, the platform takes 15% off for those who are earning less than $1M per calendar year. Signing up for the program has been available since December 3 and it’s only today that Apple has been sending out notices.
Developers who earn under $1M for this year can qualify and experience 15% reduced commission rates. New developers in 2021 will be defaulted to the program moving forward. Those who earn $1M and above per calendar year are subject to a 30% App Store commission rate.
The Cupertino-based company mentioned that the program will affect a lot of developers, all of which have the same access in Apple developer programs and tools. The aim of the program is to support new jobs, provide more funds and generate more digital commerce within...

Volkswagen CEO Says Apple Can Mount Major Challenge...
Volkswagen AG Chief Executive Officer Herbert Diess said cash-rich technology giants invading the auto industry pose a much bigger challenge for the German manufacturer than traditional rivals like Toyota Motor. From a report: "We look forward to new competitors who will certainly accelerate the change in our industry and bring in new skills," Diess said in a LinkedIn post when asked about reports that Apple is developing a self-driving car. "The unbelievable valuation and the practically unlimited access to resources instill a lot of respect in us." [...] Diess mapped out a plan during an internal meeting last week to pit VW's huge Wolfsburg plant against Tesla's factory that's under construction outside Berlin. The electric-car maker's new site in Gruenheide is bound to stoke competition for engineers, workers and customers on VWâ(TM)s home turf. "I've said it before: the most valuable company in the world will again be a mobility company," Diess said. "It could be Tesla, Apple...

Feature Request: Apple should offer users more...
Apple introduced a new software feature with iOS 13 that helps prolong the life of your iPhone’s battery called “Optimized Battery Charging.” I’d love to see Apple not only expand it to iPad and Mac but also take a page out of Tesla’s book (and Dell, Samsung, others) and adopt a feature from its charging strategy.
Update 12/24/20: It’s now over a year since Apple released its Optimized Battery Charging feature and it hasn’t really been improved. And looking back on 2020 – a year with the pandemic and the launch of the first M1 MacBooks, full battery control for charging is definitely past due.

Apple TV+ Wolfwalkers, a rich, densely packed visual...
Glen Weldon, NPR:
Wolfwalkers, from Cartoon Saloon, the production company behind 2009’s The Secret of Kells and 2014’s Song of the Sea, isn’t made for kids. Or at least, not just for kids.
Because there are a lot of other thematic elements jostling for elbow room in this tale of young English girl Robyn (voiced by Honor Kneafsey) and her father (voiced by Sean Bean) trying to make a go of it in the pre-colonial Irish town of Kilkenny.
And:
Layered over the anti-authoritarian theme is an ecological one: The town is growing, and Robyn’s father has been hired by the Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell (voiced by Simon McBurney) to clear the wolves out of the rapidly vanishing forest nearby. There’s a healthy dose of feminism in the mix, as well: Robyn only wants to help her father hunt, but her status as a young woman gets her consigned to menial scullery duties. You don’t have to scratch the film’s surface terribly hard to find a queer reading, either: Robyn...

Going all in on the Mac App Store
Unbound for Mac blog:
With the announcement of the App Store Small Business Program, I’ve stopped selling Unbound directly via the web site. I thought it would be worth explaining how I came to that decision.
This is an interesting read, mostly for developers, but also for folks interested in Apple’s business practices.
If you sell a Mac app, you likely either sell it on the Mac App Store or via an eCommerce engine like Paddle. The economics are a big part of the “how to sell” decision.
Paddle takes a much smaller cut than Apple, but requires a time and coding investment. Apple’s move to cut their end for small (under $1M) sellers from 30% to 15% definitely has an impact on the overall math.
Paddle gives you the freedom to update your app when you like, no approval necessary. Apple, obviously, has hoops to jump through, including a notarization process, and restrictions on content.
Paddle makes it easy to do demos, offer coupon codes, etc...
