Apple and Amazon Become Top US Solar Users, Besting...

Apple has spent nearly a decade dramatically expanding its use of solar energy across the United States, and the effort has paid off. From a report: The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) reports today that Apple now has the most installed solar capacity of any U.S. company, followed by Amazon, as both companies vaulted over prior industry leaders Target and Walmart. But there's a catch. In the Solar Means Business 2017 report, Apple ranked fourth behind both of the top brick-and-mortar retailers and Prologis, an industrial warehouse company, while Amazon ranked tenth, below such retailers as Kohls, Costco, Ikea, and Macy's.

The SEIA's just-published 2018 report showed Apple and Amazon surging as measured by megawatts of installed solar capacity, with Apple at 393.3MW to Amazon's 329.8MW. Target jumped from 203.5MW in 2017 to 229.7MW in 2018, and Walmart from 149.4MW to 208.9MW, but the year-over-year gains from their digital-first competitors were comparatively...

Apple reveals ‘Lisa’: Its $50 million gamble

Newsweek, in an article from 1983:

Like a magician readying his best trick, Steve Jobs waited for the houselights to dim and the crowd to quiet down. A spotlight focused on a table where a bulky shape lay hidden beneath a buff-colored cloth. “The personal computer was created by a hardware revolution of the 1970s,” Jobs, the 27-year-old multimillionaire chairman and cofounder of Apple Computer, told 1,200 Apple stockholders gathered last week in Cupertino, Calif. “The next dramatic change will come from a software revolution . . . which Apple is introducing here today.” On cue, the cloth was lifted — revealing Lisa, a new $10,000 computer and a $50 million gamble for Apple.

Great read. Another inflection point for Apple, on the road to Macintosh.

Samsung: Galaxy Fold coming in September. No really.

Samsung:

At Samsung, we’ve always focused on pioneering the next generation of mobile innovation: new products and technologies that push the entire industry forward and help users do what they can’t. Earlier this year, we announced Galaxy Fold—Samsung’s first foldable device, and the beginning of an entirely new mobile category. Since then, we’ve made improvements to Galaxy Fold to ensure consumers have the best possible experience.

And:

All of us at Samsung appreciate the support and patience we’ve received from Galaxy fans all over the world. Galaxy Fold is a device long in the making, and we’re proud to share it with the world and look forward to bringing it to consumers.

I wasn’t convinced that the Galaxy Fold had a huge market in the first go round, purely based on the price tag (I believe it started at about $2K). I can only imagine if the pricing model stays the same, the pool of buyers will be smaller, based simply on the debacle of the original...

Apple:

Starting November 3, 2019, some iPhone and iPad models introduced in 2012 and earlier will require an iOS update to maintain accurate GPS location and keep the correct date and time. This is due to the GPS time rollover issue that began affecting GPS-enabled products from other manufacturers on April 6, 2019. Affected Apple devices are not impacted until November 3, 2019.

By my math, that’d be iPhone 5 or earlier, iPad (4th gen), iPad mini or earlier.

Jamf, which specializes in Apple management solutions, has announced the results of an independent, global survey of 700 retail IT decision makers on the state of mobile technology in retail. And most retailers prefer Apple devices in-store for the transformation of the retail experience.

Conducted by Vanson Bourne and commissioned by Jamf, the goal of the survey was to collect data on the benefits gleaned and challenges faced from mobile technology deployments in retail environments across the globe. Key findings reveal that nearly all IT decision makers surveyed (99%) say that their retail store(s) have implemented at least one mobile technology in store, highlighting the potential for technology to transform the shopping experience.

Apple patent filing involves generating an image of...

Apple has filed for another patent (number 20190230297) regarding the rumored “Apple Glasses,” an augmented reality/virtual reality headset. It regards a method and system for generating at least one image of a real environment.

In an augmented reality application, so-called video see-through augmented reality displays a live camera image of a real environment superimposed with spatially registered digital information in the form of a virtual object on a display device. A virtual object may, for example, represent information about the environment captured in the image, such as annotations.

In the patent filing, Apple notes that, in common approaches, the same image is often used for pose determination and visualization and this image is usually captured and generated with imaging parameters which are configured such that the resulting image looks nice to humans (e.g. it has a high contrast, and the central part of the image is focused, i.e...

iPhone sales look to remain steady this year

Though there have been predictions that iPhone sales will take a hit this year, Bloomberg reports that Apple suppliers have been instructed to manufacture parts for about 75 million phones through the end of the year, about the same as iPhone XS, XR and XS Max sales for the same period in 2018.

The volumes planned for the next iPhone launch cycle would signal steady demand for the company’s most important product, despite U.S.-China trade tensions and a decline in the overall smartphone market, the article adds. Analysts estimate Apple sold 70 million to 80 million new iPhones in the second half of last year.

U.S. businesses are increasingly turning to solar energy as a cost-effective means of powering their operations. As of 2018, Apple leads the nation with the most solar capacity installed, followed closely by Amazon, Target, Walmart and Switch.

The Solar Energy Industries Association’s (SEIA’s) seventh annual Solar Means Business Report follows solar adoption by businesses across the U.S., ranging from some of the country’s largest and most recognizable brands to the small businesses that make up our communities. For the first time, the 2018 report captures large off-site installations, as well as data on solar systems located at the site of the businesses themselves. Both installation types have grown considerably in recent years, according to the SEIA.

Through 2018, this report tracks more than 7,000 megawatts (MW) of installed solar capacity across 35,000...

How about an Apple TV with a dedicated physical game...

New iPhones, new iPad Pros, and new Apple Watches are definitely coming (probably in September). A 16-inch MacBook Pro is rumored. The modular Mac Pro and the Apple Pro XDR display will arrive before the holiday season — and an upgraded iMac Pro could, as well. But what of the Apple TV set-top box?

Some folks want to see an upgraded model that could support the attachment of external storage devices. Others want to see a cheaper TV dongle to compete with the Amazon Fire Stick and Google Chromecast.

I’d like to see Apple push a next gen set-top box as a dedicated gaming device with an Apple-made physical controller. It would also be nice if the latter worked with Macs, iPad Pros, and iPhones.

And if Apple really wanted to make things interesting, the next gen Apple TV could support gesture control. In 2015, Apple was granted a patent (number 8,908,277) by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office for a “lens array projector”...

Firewall: Robo Call Blocker review: The app...

According to The New York Times, upwards of 48 billion Americans were hounded by robocalls in 2018, an increase of 56.8 percent over the previous year. That averages out to roughly 150 scam, telemarketing, and unwanted calls annually for every adult with a phone—a number expected to balloon higher in the future.

That’s precisely why a cottage industry flourishes on the App Store, supplying tools to combat this menace. Unfortunately, most call blocker solutions rely on outdated, ineffective blacklists, or worse yet, require users to do the heavy lifting by reporting rogue numbers as they pop up. A new app called Firewall takes the opposite approach: Whitelisting everyone you know and sending the rest to limbo.

House passes anti-robocall legislation, bill thought...

Robocalls may soon be a thing of the past.

The House of Representatives on Wednesday passed the Stopping Bad Robocalls Act, which was unanimously approved by the Energy and Commerce Committee last week, and was sent to the House floor yesterday, where it was passed with a 429-3 vote.

The bill offers the Federal Communication Commission additional power to take action against illegal robocalling, and would require that all carriers comply with identity verification technology. Carriers failing to do this would be fined for not meeting the verification requirement.

The fees themselves would range from $1,500 to $10,000 per violation.

Frank Pallone Jr., chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee, said that the onslaught of robocalls affecting users “threatens the way consumers view and use their telephones” and is “undermining our entire phone system.”

The Stopping Bad Robocalls Act is approved by the House today is similar to the Telephone...

UPS completes first drone delivery test, envisions...

Your UPS packages could be delivered by drone in the relatively near future.

UPS drone delivery testing kicked off on Monday with a successful package delivery alongside a human driver. In 2018 the FAA chose UPS to sit on its drone advisory committee.

As of Monday, UPS tested a Workhorse HorseFly UAV Delivery drive that launched from the top of a UPS package car. The drone delivered a package to a home by itself prior to returning to the vehicle while the driver made a separate delivery.

Mark Wallace, the senior vice president of global engineering and sustainability for the company, offered the following comments:

“This test is different than anything we’ve done with drones so far. It has implications for future deliveries, especially in rural locations where our package cars often have to travel miles to make a single delivery. Imagine a triangular delivery route where the stops are miles apart by road. Sending a drone from a package car to make just...

Sky: Children of the Light is a stunning reminder...

I don’t remember much about the physical experience of playing Journey, Thatgamecompany’s stylized 2012 PlayStation 3 masterpiece about a pilgrimage up a distant light-crowned peak. I remember the emotion, though, and that memory sometimes leads me to describe it as “the religious experience as game.” I wept during the credits. I let the music sweep me away, and I felt love for the nameless player who trudged with me up the mountainside. And in that flood of emotion, the last things thought about were the controls.

After an eight-year absence, Thatgamecompany has a new game out called Sky: Children of the Light, and I suppose we in the Appleverse should be grateful that it came to iOS first. As we’ve come to expect from the studio, it’s lovely, both in sight and sound. Its tale of returning souls to constellations champions empathy, flying, and...

Hands On: Chrome Remote Desktop (OS X, iOS)

Imagine squeezing your retina iMac screen down onto an iPhone 5. You can do it. Now Google has released Chrome Remote Desktop for iOS and you can do it for free. You'll do it, too: try this once and you will forever keep finding other reasons why it's incredibly useful. It's fantastic when you forget a file, for instance, and can now just find and email it to yourself from afar. And it will save your soul, your sanity and yo...

InvenSense hit with lawsuit over concessions in...

A new lawsuit filed against gyroscope and accelerometer supplier for Apple, InvenSense, accuses the company of failing to tell investors about the concessions it made to secure a recent deal. InvenSense parts are used in the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus; executives should have warned investors, the suit alleges, that Apple was given a "sweetheart deal" that would hurt profits. "Instead of revealing the true condition of the company and its prospects, defendants hid those facts from investors and chose to issue strong guidance and paint a picture of a bright future with a new mega-customer," the complai...

Hands On: Toca Hair Salon 2 (iOS)

Makeover apps tend to be somewhat serious, and are generally geared toward adults. Instead of being a fun game, they tend to be more akin to photo-editing software, which is generally pretty complex and low on the amusement scale. Toca Boca, however, has stepped forth with Toca Hair Salon 2, a makeover game that offers a lot to younger gamers or future beauticians....

The Los Angeles Unified School District's failed iPad deployment was botched early on, according to a review by the US Education Department. Hands On: PhotoWatermark (OS X)

It's a different world. You might be the sort who would never take photo from a website and use it in your own book, but today if an image is online, it's as if the world sees it as fair game. Maybe that's a peek into our base immorality and the ultimate cataclysmic self-destruction of humanity, or maybe it's just that cut and paste is easy. Whatever it is, though, it's happening and you cannot stop it – not even with an application like this: but if PhotoWatermark can't prevent the copying of images, it can help photographers and artists considerably by adding identifying text to your image...

While the idea that Apple probably had another record-breaking holiday quarter (what the company calls fiscal 2015 Q1) is unsurprising to all but selected pundits, a spate of reports released on Monday may be painting a general portrait of not just significant improvement, but more importantly growth in key areas of importance both to investors and analysis as well as to the health of the company. Sales of Macs look to be way up, iOS devices are selling much better in a key foreign market, and Apple's suppliers are flourishing -- all signs that point to better-than-expected quarter....
