iOS 18: Everything you need to know about the next...

Macworld

Every year, Apple announces the new version of iOS at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June. It then enters a beta testing period (first for developers only, then for the public) before being released in September, around the time the new iPhones go on sale.

We don’t expect the process or timeline to change this year, but that’s about the only thing we can count on being the same as years past. When it comes to iOS 18 itself—its features and changes—the rumors and leaks point to what might be one of the most consequential iPhone software updates in years.

What follows is a summary of rumors and leaks, but bear in mind that the final product may not quite resemble what you read here. Information about upcoming Apple products is often unreliable, and even when it’s accurate, plans change. That said, this is what we think we know so far.

Macworld

Apple’s list of currently available content for Apple TV+ continues to grow, and so does the list of upcoming projects in the works. Films, limited series, specials, and multi-season series—Apple’s got lots of irons in the fire.d

Some of these projects have been officially announced and acknowledged by Apple, while others have been reported by the Hollywood press, which always has its ear to the ground about what projects actors, directors, and producers are involved in.

We’ve divided this list in two: Coming Soon is a list of shows for which Apple has given an official release date or release window, and Further Out compiles content that is still in production or perhaps haven’t even begun yet.

Enlarge (credit: Thomas Trutschel / Contributor | Photothek)

Smaller web browsers are gaining traction in the European Union after the Digital Markets Act (DMA) started requiring designated gatekeepers like Google and Apple to make it easier to switch default web browsers on devices.

Previously, tech giants were able to lock users into setting their own browsers as defaults—or at least make it complicated to update the defaults—offering the majority of users their own browsing services for free while collecting data used for ad-targeting. This, the EU feared, kept users from switching to defaults that...

The next major step for Apple chips could happen...

Macworld

According to a report by DigiTimes (subscription required), chip maker TSMC is on schedule with its 2nm manufacturing process, which could mean that Apple will start using 2nm chips as soon as next year.

TSMC may be able to start trial runs of 2nm later this year, with small production runs following that, and larger production starting later in 2025. The timing seems to indicate that the A19 processor in the 2025 iPhone Pro would be the first 2nm chip. That could be followed by a 2nm M4 chip in the MacBook Pro and iMac, and maybe any other Mac if it did not get an M3 upgrade (the Mac mini, in particular).

DigiTimes also reports that TSMC is already working on the production process after 2nm, which...

I’ve long been a user of the 2019 Intel Mac Pro. I firmly believe it is one of the best, most upgradable products Apple has ever released. And even with a new M2 Ultra-equipped Mac Pro on the market, I’m not giving up my 2019 Mac Pro just yet.

To be clear, I’m not recommending that you go buy this discontinued product. Generally, most users should not consider an Intel Mac Pro—or Apple silicon Mac Pro for that matter. A Mac Studio with the M2 Ultra can do what’s needed in most key areas. The newly-minted MacBook Pro with an M3 Max is an absolute performance champion that’s power efficient and priced right.

I was recently chatting with someone about what it was like in the early days of Apple’s second act with the iPod, and I mentioned that Mac users had the ultimate flex against PC users: no viruses and no malware. This was when PC users could get a virus from simply breathing in the wrong direction. The general argument from the mainstream at the time was that once Macs became popular, they’d be filled with viruses as well. The Mac became popular (especially at work), and the mass virus attacks never arrived. So that begs the question of 2024: Do you need malware protection on macOS...

If you are concerned about your privacy and security online using a VPN could give you some reassurance. Apple provides various measures in macOS that make Macs more secure, but if you want to ensure that the connection between your Mac and the internet is protected, rather than the computer itself, you need a VPN.

Using a VPN essentially makes you invisible on the web–your data is encrypted, your IP address is hidden, and you can even make it look like you are surfing from another country. This latter reason is the key motive many people using a VPN have: they want to access services that are locked to a particular region, such as accessing U.S. Netflix from the U.K or...

The World Doesn't Need More Journal Apps

We're seeing a boom in journaling apps as safer, easier ways to ease us back into posting everything online. From a report: Last year, Apple released a journal app with iOS 17. Former Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer just unveiled a photo app called Shine, which is made to share photos and memories with a select group of people. Today, Retro -- a startup that we called "the new Instagram" -- is launching a feature called Journals within the app, which lets you record both photos and notes for a select group of people.

As a lifelong journaler, it's hard to forget that I already have an intimate, safe space to record my life and share memories. It is a notebook. I don't have to worry about marketers selling my information, because it's not accessible. What if creating a safe space all of your own means just getting off the internet altogether? Most of these apps are based on the central premise that most of us would rather talk to family or close friends than with a pretty stranger...

visionOS 1.1.2 is released to fix unspecified bugs

Macworld

Apple has released visionOS 1.1.2 to fix a few bugs, but the frustratingly opaque release notes don’t give us any idea what was fixed. No operating systems for other devices (iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, watchOS) appear to have been updated at the same time, so whatever was wrong seems to be specific to the Apple Vision Pro. The visionOS 1.2 developer beta got an update today as well, likely to include the same unspecified bug fixes.

Apple’s release notes follow the boilerplate “unspecified bug fix” template:

This update provides important bug fixes and is recommended for all users.

iPhone SE 4: Everything you need to know about Apple...

Macworld

Apple updated its entry-level iPhone in March 2022, adding a few nips and tucks here and there along with a quiet price increase. It kept the Home button and small form factor that appeals to some, but the aging design and minimal upgrades meant the new iPhone SE was coolly received by the masses, with many looking forward to the next generation and reviewers hoping Apple was planning a more radical overhaul of the device.

Right on cue, rumors are now starting to appear about what that might look like. In this article we’ve gathered together everything we know so far, and what we can reasonably speculate, about the iPhone SE 4.

Update 04/09/24: We’ve added some specs and details from the latest rumors about the iPhone SE 4, which is estimated to launch in the spring of 2025.

Best Antivirus for Mac 2024: Top Security Software...

Macworld

It’s typically Windows computers that get all the news headlines for attracting computer viruses, which can mean it’s all too easy to forget that Macs are vulnerable to malware, too. Our pick of the best Mac antivirus software will help keep you and your Mac or MacBook safe from whatever rogue software comes your way.

Macs have traditionally been a far less tempting target for malware writers, leading some to believe that Macs don’t even need antivirus, but their increasing popularity means they’re not immune from viruses and other types of malware. Virus researchers at AV-Test reported 1968 new Mac malware versions for October 2023, which is a drop in the ocean compared to the 3,957,566 new pests on the Windows platform, but evidence nonetheless that viruses can be a threat to Mac users.

Beeper Took On Apple's iMessage Dominance. Now...

Late last year the messaging app Beeper raised the ire of Apple when it found a way to recreate Apple's infamous "blue bubble" messaging on Android. Apple later hobbled Beeper, but it's not an entirely unhappy ending: The startup has been acquired in a deal valued at $125 million. From a report: Founded three years ago, Beeper is being snapped up by Automattic, the respected parent company of WordPress, the blogging and content management platform, as well as Tumblr, which it acquired in 2019. Beeper cofounder Eric Migicovsky said that the company will continue to exist as a stand-alone product within Automattic, and that all of Beeper's 27 employees -- who, like Automattic's employees, are entirely remote -- will be absorbed into the larger entity.

Exact financial terms of the acquisition weren't disclosed. According to Migicovsky, Beeper will be part of Automattic's broader strategy to offer more messaging features. Automattic first invested in Beeper in 2022, and late...

Macworld

When Samsung released its first Galaxy Fold back in 2019, there was a ton of excitement, which was quickly tempered when people got a chance to try it out. Even after the early wrinkles were ironed out, one major flaw was still evident: the crease. Samsung has worked to lessen it over the years, but it’s still something of an eyesore–and a new report claims Apple is facing the same issue with its folding iPad.

The difference is Apple won’t ship its folding iPad until it can remove the crease entirely. According to...

The next Apple Watch is supposed to be the Series 10, or, if Apple’s nomenclature pattern holds, the Apple Watch Series X. It remains to be seen whether Apple will do the same for the Apple Watch Series X, but we’re starting to get glimpses of what’s in store.

The latest comes from The Elec with a report that the next Apple Watch could use a low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) OLED display. This technology applies oxide to...

Best photo editing software for Mac

Macworld

The popularity of selfies and smartphone photography in recent years has given rise to dozens of affordable photo-editing programs aimed at amateur photographers. While these free (or low-cost) apps are great for people who simply want to smarten up their selfies or holiday snaps, they may not offer the features pro photographers need to edit photos.

If you want to edit your photos like a pro – or you are a pro photographer, designer, web developer, graphic artist or other creative professional, then you may wish to consider one of these pro photo editors.

Total Defense Antivirus for Mac Review

Macworld

At a glanceExpert's Rating
Pros

  • Easy to create a whitelist of safe/protected files and folders within the macOS.
  • Robust Total Defense Shield and Safe Files features allow for an impressive level of protection against malware and ransomware efforts.
  • Good user interface and layout.

Cons

  • Left chunks of known malware in place during testing.
  • TrafficLight anti-phishing add-ons seem almost ineffective for Safari users, allowing access to highly questionable websites.
  • Excessively long initial scan time.

Our Verdict

Unfortunately, Total Defense has a few issues, including long initial scan and the failure to remove some malware. With some bug fixes it could be better.

Apple’s bold new Vision is very hard to see right now

Macworld

The Vision Pro is an odd duck. (What else would you do with an odd duck than strap it to your face?)

It’s a device that’s largely defined by its experiences, from spatial computing to immersive video and memories. But Apple hasn’t exactly bombarded Vision Pro owners with them, and the few that have arrived lately have been hit-and-miss.

Major League Baseball shipped an update to its visionOS app just in time for opening day and it hit for the cycle, if by “hitting for the cycle” you mean striking out swinging, striking out looking and grounding into a triple play. (These are all baseball terms. Feel free to look them up if you’re confused.) Many of the snazzy features it demoed at the Vision Pro unveiling were missing and if you close the main navigation window while watching a game video, all the windows close. Hopefully, it at least made a happy “bleep-bloop” sort of noise. Reviewers were unclear about this....

Surfshark VPN for Mac review

Macworld

At a GlanceExpert's Rating
Pros

  • Simple to use
  • No device limits
  • Some Mac performance hiccups

Cons

  • Slower on OpenVPN

Our Verdict

SurfShark is a great VPN option that’s as easy to use as the best of them, while maintaining security across an unlimited number of devices – something we don’t see often. As with the likes of NordVPN, it leans heavily on two-year pricing, which can be problematic when VPN legislation and privacy protocols can regularly wax and wane.

2024 iPad Pro: Everything you need to know about...

Macworld

The current iPad range is one of the most populated we’ve seen. It includes two iterations of the standard iPad, the iPad mini, the iPad Air, and the 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models, so there’s plenty to choose from. It seems Apple isn’t stopping there, though; rumors suggest it could be adding an even larger iPad Pro to the line-up. Here’s everything we know about the next-generation iPad Pro.

Update April 8: The latest intel says the iPad Pro will probably ship the week of May 6.

2024 iPad Pro release date: When will the M3 iPad Pro arrive?

Following no iPad updates at all in 2023, it looks like there will be a new iPad Pro in 2024. With the last update to the range being in October 2022, and iPad Pro launches tending to happen every 18 months, a spring 2024 update is nearly a certainty.

For some clues as to when Apple could launch the new iPad Pro, we normally look...

Apple now allows retro game emulators in the App...

Macworld

For about as long as anyone can remember, people have been trying to use the impressive power and always-in-your-pocket traits of iPhones to play games for old consoles like GameBoy. Emulating the functions of the chips in old consoles is perfectly legal, but distributing the games themselves (usually called “ROMs”) is often not as they are protected by copyright.

Apple has never allowed these apps in the App Store, though. So those making retro console emulators for iPhone have had to make their apps available via sideloading on jailbroken iPhones (a big security risk, and increasingly difficult besides) or sometimes even by hiding their emulator within an innocuous app like a calculator.

New changes to the ...
