If you like the M1 MacBooks, you’ll love what’s...

Apple’s new M1-powered MacBooks have made a whole lot of noise in the industry since their launch just a month ago, but according to a new rumor, we’ve just scratched the surface of what Apple’s new silicon can do. Bloomberg reports that Apple is hard at work on the chips that will power the next round of Apple silicon Macs and the top-of-the-line version could have as many as 32 high-performance cores.

Bloomberg: Apple preps next Mac chips with aim to...

Bloomberg:

Chip engineers at the Cupertino, California-based technology giant are working on several successors to the M1 custom chip, Apple’s first Mac main processor that debuted in November. If they live up to expectations, they will significantly outpace the performance of the latest machines running Intel chips, according to people familiar with the matter who asked not to be named because the plans aren’t yet public.

And:

Intel’s shares slid 1.7% in early trading in New York Monday after the news.

My gut is to be skeptical that Apple can build a chip that can take on a PC with a discrete GPU. But the M1 has definitely under promised and over delivered, crushing all my expectations.

And:

Apple engineers are also developing more ambitious graphics processors. Today’s M1 processors are offered with a custom Apple graphics engine that comes in either 7- or 8-core variations. For its future high-end laptops and mid-range desktops, Apple is...

16GB of RAM and 75 open apps — Stress testing the M1

Rob Griffiths did as the title suggested, launched 75 apps on the M1 in an effort to see how that impacted the M1 MacBook Pro. Read the post, amazing to me how brilliantly the M1 Macs handle what people are throwing at it.

Also worth reading, Rob’s followup post, a more comprehensive review on the M1 MacBook Pro.

A bit of a spoiler:

I’ve had my M1 MacBook Pro for a few weeks now, and I can confidently say this is the best-performing Mac laptop I’ve ever owned—and not just because of its benchmark scores. It’s that the entire system has been designed to take advantage of Apple’s homebuilt powerful but low-power CPU. As I use the machine, I have to keep reminding myself that it’s the basically the lowest-end ARM chipped Mac you’ll ever be able to buy.

I’m still loving my M1 MacBook Air, can’t wait to see what Apple rolls out to bring the...

Back in July, we heard reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predict that iPhone would gain periscope lenses as soon as 2022. A report followed in November saying the same. [VIDEO] This is a beta app, not yet released, but the concept is promising.

Watch the video embedded in the main Loop post to get a basic sense of the app, called Magico. I do like the idea of gestures (think this scene from Minority Report) as a way to control your Apple TV, replacing the simple (but low discoverability) remote.

Interesting.

Jean-Louis Gassée and some Apple Arm claim chowder

Every time I hear the Gruber-coined term claim chowder, I think of this post:

“Is Apple serious competition?: Palm CEO Ed Colligan seems downright nonchalant about rumors that Apple may introduce a mobile phone to market in the coming year.”

And:

“We’ve learned and struggled for a few years here figuring out how to make a decent phone,” he said. “PC guys are not going to just figure this out. They’re not going to just walk in.”

Delicious.

Now follow the headline link, where Jean-Louis Gassée shares some Apple Arm claim chowder. Not quite as momentous as that original, quoted above, but an interesting read, nonetheless.

Side note: I find it interesting that “Claim Chowder” has an entry in Urban...

Holiday photo books have always been well-received gifts, whether it’s photos of the vacations and other fun experiences you’ve had with your significant other, or photos of your kids as a present for their grandparents. But they also take some time and effort to put together.

We noted back in October that Motif – the company which previously made photo books under Apple branding – had been updated with a number of features designed to make it quicker and easier to create to turn the iPhone shots in your Photos app into a printed photo book. ∞ Apple Originals. A promo.

[VIDEO] The ad embedded in the main Loop post highlights six Apple Originals.

The ad itself is well crafted, great use of text editing to hammer home various points. Well done.

But I do wonder, why these six? Why not Long Way Up? On the Rocks? Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet? Home Before Dark?

As I look through the list of Apple TV+ content branded as Apple Originals, I do wonder why these six were chosen. But I also marvel at how big the Apple TV+ catalog has grown in just a bit more than a year.

Apple has quietly built a strong competitor to Netflix, et al. A competitor that will bring more and more people into the fold, make a growing contribution to Apple’s services revenue.

Tip of the cap, Apple.

“Both hardware subscriptions and the subsequent 360° bundle align with two macro trends: an ongoing digital transformation and changing consumer buying preferences,” writes Loup Ventures. “Additionally, Apple is the only company that can make this work, given their service and maintenance logistics, along with seamless hardware and software integration.”

Today, about 55% of the company’s revenue can be purchased as a subscription. Loup Ventures says that, by adding Mac, iPad, and Watch subscriptions, that number will approach 85%. The research group doesn’t offer a prediction on what a...

When it comes to Apple’s MagSafe Duo Charger, the design, as you might expect from Apple, is elegant. It easily folds, which makes it great for taking on the road. If you own an iPhone 12 model and an Apple Watch, that convenience might make this a good purchase for you. Otherwise, this product is too pricey for what you get.

For instance, the MagSafe Duo Charger doesn’t come with a power adapter, so, if you don’t own one, you’ll have to buy one ($19 for Apple’s 20W USB-C model and $49 fo rate 30We version). Really, Apple? You couldn’t throw in a power adapter at the price you’r asking for the Duo Charger?!

How to hide app icons on your Apple Watch

Have you downloaded third party apps on the Apple Watch only to find after a while that you don't use them very much and want to hide their icons? Here’s how:

Touch and hold an app icon from the Home screen and press the red X next to it. Or you can go to the Apple Watch app on your iPhone and show/hide apps from the My Watch section.

Even though you've removed their Watch interfaces, the apps will remain installed on your iPhone unless you delete them from that device, as well.

You can also rearrange apps on the Watch’s screen. You can do it directly from the smartwatch by pressing and holding an app’s icon, then moving it to anew spot. Or you can go to My Watch on the iPhone, then to App Layout. There you can arrange your apps as you wish.

(This how-to is based on my experiences and info on Apple's support pages — where the images sometimes come from.)

The rumored Apple Glasses could sport a tunable lens

Apple has been granted a patent (number 10,852,553) for an electronic device with a “tunable lens.” It involves the rumored “Apple Glasses,” an augmented reality/virtual reality/mixed reality head-mounted display.

Like others of its kind, Apple’s HMD will sport optical systems with lenses. The lenses allow displays in the devices to present visual content to users.

Head-mounted devices typically include lenses with fixed shapes and properties. Apple says that if care isn’t taken, it may be difficult to adjust these types of lenses to optimally present content to each user of the head-mounted device. The tech giant wants its HMD to avoid such problems.

Here’s Apple’s summary of the invention: “A lens module in a head-mounted device may include a fluid-filled chamber, a semi-rigid lens element that at least partially defines the fluid-filled chamber, and at least one actuator configured to selectively bend the semi-rigid lens...

Through his example, stories and gentle humor, Stillwater gives the children a deeper understanding of their feelings as well as tools that help them face their own day-to-day challenges. Apple’s App Store priorities for the year ahead

As 2021 peeks its head over the horizon (and with it, hopefully, an upward swing at last), it's time to cast our glances to the year ahead.

While Apple has no shortage of priorities for the next 12 months, one area that seems as though it might get more attention than usual is the company's main digital storefront, the App Store. Services continue to be good business for Apple, and the App Store is a major component of that market, but it's also not without its challenges.

Apple has already instituted some changes to its long-running App Store practices, and recent developments have also made it clear that further changes are likely on the way. So what do we have to look forward to in 2021?

An Apple Store App Easter egg to get you in the...

It’s snowing in the Apple Store app!

One time-honored tradition at Apple is placing an Easter egg in an app or even the firmware of a device. Wikipedia describes these as “a message, image, or feature hidden in a video game, film, or other, usually in electronics, medium”. For example, some early Macs in the 1980s had a bitmapped photo of the Mac development team in firmware that could be accessed by typing a special code. The tradition continues today with a fun Easter egg in the Apple Store App.

Launch the app and enter “let it snow” in the search field at the top of the screen. Immediately, light gray “snowflakes” begin falling at random all over the screen. The effect continues as long as you have the app open.

Fortunately, the snow doesn’t pile up, nor does it need to be shoveled. Enjoy this Easter egg and let it get...

A ban on the social video service TikTok won't be enforced by the U.S. government, a report claims, with the ban being overlooked while talks between the two parties continue in earnest. In late November, ByteDance was given a seven-day extension to divest its holdings in TikTok's U.S. arm, which ran out on December 4. Qualcomm executives brushed off a question about Apple's new M1-based Macs during a question-and-answer session at the company's Snapdragon Summit today, where Qualcomm announced a new flagship smartphone chipset but no upgrades to its year-old chips for PCs... In general, reviews of Qualcomm-powered laptops such as the Microsoft Surface Pro X have celebrated the devices' long battery life, but lamented problems with third-party apps that were originally coded for Intel processors. That stands in stark contrast to Apple's new M1-based Macs, which don't seem to be slowed down as badly by older software...

An Apple Car could have windows with enhanced sun...

Let the Apple Car rumors roll on. Apple has been granted a patent (number 10,850,666) for “windows with active layers” on a vehicle. It involves both front, back, and side windows, as well as a sun roof, with built-in, adjustable defrosting features and the ability to adjust the amount of sunlight they allow to pass through — all while looking good.

In the patent data, Apple note that vehicle windows sometimes include heating and light filtering components. For example, vehicle windows may include filter layers that block infrared light. Vehicle windows with infrared-light-blocking capabilities may help avoid excessive heat buildup in vehicles that are exposed to sunlight.

A rear window in a vehicle may use an ohmically heated wire for defrosting. A vehicle may have a sunroof window with an adjustable tint for selectively darkening or brightening of the interior of the vehicle.

However, Apple says it can be challenging to...
