UnitedHealthcare — a wearable device well-being program available for purchase to employers across the country with self-funded and fully insured health plans — has introduced enhancements to one of its national well-being programs.

It’s now providing certain members free access to Apple Fitness+ for studio-style workout classes. UnitedHealthcare Motion enrollees with Apple Watch will have access to Apple’s fitness service for at least six months at no additional cost.

Following the extended trial, UnitedHealthcare Motion enrollees may be able to apply program incentives to cover the Apple Fitness+ monthly subscription cost (US$9.99). UnitedHealthcare Motion members are also able to apply program earnings toward the purchase price of Apple Watch, enabling participants to own – with a zero balance – the Apple Watch after approximately six months of meeting daily activity goals.

Apple’s Fitness+ is the latest shot in Silicon...

Emily Abbate, GQ:

After nine months of pandemic life, I’ve tried what feels like every streaming workout and app there is, and I’ve gotten picky. But as you would expect from the company, Fitness+ is an incredibly slick app, where users can choose workouts from nine different categories: HIIT, yoga, core, strength, treadmill, cycling, rowing, dance, and “mindful cooldown.” The studio used for filming is gorgeous, and the quality of the videos is top notch.

And:

Whether you’re using the app at the gym on an iPhone or in your living room with an Apple TV, you’ll get cues and vibrations on your wrist that synch up with the workout, and the watch will beam biometric stats like heart rate and calories burned to the screen.

This last bit is a critical feature of Fitness+, that tight integration between Apple Watch and Fitness+. And you can add Apple TV to that mix as well. If you are brand new to Fitness+, you can register yourself by just holding your Apple...

Apple’s Siri can now make animal sounds like a duck...

Kif Leswing, CNBC:

Apple’s Siri assistant can now quack like a duck if you ask it nicely.

To try it out, users have to update to iOS 14.3, the newest version of the iPhone operating system, and say, “Hey Siri, what does a duck sound like?” In response, Siri will play the natural call of a ruddy duck.

On Monday, Siri started to play short audio clips in response to questions about what something sounds like. Sounds now built into the system include animals, instruments, and vehicles, and Apple says there are hundreds of options. On an iPhone or iPad, Siri also brings up a picture of the animal and a link to more information from Wikipedia.

As of this writing, I’ve not been able to reproduce this behavior and, searching Twitter/web, have not encountered other mentions of folks getting this to work. I asked Kif about this and he said:

It should be rolled out to everyone in the US and most other countries today.

So keep checking.

Apple TV+ announces The Snoopy Show

Apple:

“The Snoopy Show” is a new animated series for kids and families that stars the internationally beloved beagle and his feathered best friend Woodstock as they tackle all-new adventures. Snoopy may seem like just a happy-dancin’, bone-lovin’, doghouse-sittin’ pup, but he’s much more than that. He’s Joe Cool: hippest kid in school. He’s surfer king and famed arm wrestler Masked Marvel. He’s a World War I flying ace who battles the Red Baron. All of his bold, beloved personas are on full display in this brand-new animated comedy.

For just a brief, shining moment, I envisioned this as a talk show, a la Space Ghost Coast to Coast.

Still gonna check it out though. Coming Feb 5.

Apple has applied for a patent (number 10,869,073) for a method of offering  simultaneous playback for various folks with different visual and audio needs.

Expect an updated Apple TV set box in the first half...

Apple plans to release an updated Apple TV set-top box in 2021, according to Nikkei Asia Review. It doesn’t say when it will be released, but the Sellers Research Group (that’s me) thinks we’ll see it before spring.

It will almost certainly include an improved remote, a more power processor (at least a A12X chip), and improved storage options. The current 32GB and 64GB of storage simply aren’t enough with the blooming of 4K movies and TV shows, even though a lot of our streaming content is stored in iCloud. We need Apple TVs available in 128GB, 256GB, and 500GB options.

Also, expect the 2021 Apple TV set-top box to be tied in heavily with the Apple Arcade gaming service. That said, I expect Apple to release its own gaming controller/gamepad that will work with Apple TV, Macs, and iPads.

Apple purportedly plans 30% increase in iPhone...

Apple plans to produce up to 96 million iPhones for the first half of 2021, a nearly 30% year-on-year increase, after demand for its first-ever 5G handsets surged amid the pandemic, according to Nikkei Asia.

The tech giant has purportedly asked suppliers to build 95 million to 96 million smartphones, including the latest iPhone 12 range (the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max) and the older iPhone 11 and iPhone SE. However, Nikkei Asia notes that industrywide shortages of key components could derail those plains.

The article adds that the tentative full-year forecast that Apple shared with its suppliers suggests it plans to build up to 230 million iPhones in 2021, including both old and new models. If it happens, this would mark a 20% increase from 2019.

‘The Snoopy Show’ premieres February 5, 2021, on...

“The Snoopy Show” premieres February 5, 2021, on Apple TV+. The animated, family friendly show is based, of course, on the “Peanuts” comic strip by Charles M. Schulz.

Here’s how “The Snoopy Snow” is described: “The Snoopy Show” is a new animated series for kids and families that stars the internationally beloved beagle and his feathered best friend Woodstock as they tackle all-new adventures. Snoopy may seem like just a happy-dancin’, bone-lovin’, doghouse-sittin’ pup, but he’s much more than that. He’s Joe Cool: hippest kid in school. He's surfer king and famed arm wrestler Masked Marvel. He’s a World War I flying ace who battles the Red Baron. All of his bold, beloved personas are on full display in this brand-new animated comedy.”

Apple TV+ is available on the Apple TV app in over 100 countries and regions, on over 1 billion screens, including iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, iPod touch, Mac, select Samsung, LG, Sony, and VIZIO smart TVs...

macOS Big Sur supports Time Machine on APFS-...

Apple started shifting Macs from its old HFS+ filesystem to its more sophisticated APFS format with macOS 10.13 High Sierra. In that release, all SSD-based Macs were upgraded to APFS. Fusion Drives followed with macOS 10.14 Mojave. But it took a full three releases from the first APFS appearance until Time Machine backups could be written to drives formatted with APFS: macOS 11.0 Big Sur is the first release to allow that.

But you format a Time Machine drive to APFS, there are a few things to consider.

There’s no way to convert an HFS+ Time Machine volume to one that uses APFS without erasing it. Apple created an exceedingly wacky way to encompass Time Machine’s snapshot format inside the APFS format, almost as if the company hadn’t developed both APFS and Time Machine. (Insert thinking face emoji here, for sure.)

The process is triggered by the Camera app, an NFC tag, Safari banner, Messages link or Place Card in Maps, and integrates with platform tools like Apple Pay and Sign in with Apple.

How to remove startup and login items on your Mac

When you turn on your Mac, various apps, add-ons, and invisible background processes start running all by themselves. This is usually what you want, but you may sometimes see items running that you don’t recall adding yourself. Where do they come from?

Because such items can increase your Mac’s startup time and may decrease its performance, you’ll want to make sure your Mac is loading only items that are useful to you. Here’s a quick primer on the various kinds of startup and login items and how to manage them.

Login items

Apple's Fitness Video Service That Competes...

Todd Haselton from CNBC reviews Apple Fitness+, with some thoughts on how it compares with Peloton's similar app. Here's an excerpt from his report: Apple's subscription fitness app, Fitness+, launches Monday. I've been using it for the past several days and I think it offers a nice variety of workouts that people will like. You need an Apple Watch to take the prerecorded exercise classes, which are available on iPhones, iPads and the Apple TV. It's a smart way for Apple to make the Apple Watch even stickier. If people get really into the fitness classes, like I have, it will be yet another way Apple keeps people locked in to its ecosystem of products. Why buy another phone, tablet or watch if you really like Fitness+? It also comes at a great time, when people aren't in gyms and are at home looking for ways to exercise.

Like other fitness apps, including Peloton's, which starts at $12.99 a month for classes that don't need the company's connected spin bike, you don't need...

Apple Launches New App Store Privacy Labels So You...

Apple is officially launching its so-called "nutrition label" privacy disclosures for all iOS device owners running the latest version of iOS 14. The Verge reports: Apple says the new labels will be required for apps on all of its platforms -- that includes iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS -- and they will have to be up to date and accurate every time a developer submits a new update. Apple is also holding itself to the same standard, something the company clarified last week when Facebook-owned WhatsApp criticized the company for an apparent inconsistency in its requirements, before Apple said it, too, will provide labels for all its own software. The company's own first-party apps will all have the same disclosures on their App Store product pages. In the event an app doesn't have an App Store product page because it cannot be removed, like the Messages app, Apple says it will be providing privacy label information on the web.
