Google's Stadia game streaming service is now...

Google's Stadia game streaming platform is now accessible on iPhone and iPads. Apple's rules for the App Store make it next to impossible to publish apps for services that stream games from the cloud (as opposed to over local networks). Therefore, Google has taken to making Stadia accessible via a web app.

To use it, go to stadia.google.com in Safari on your iPhone or iPad. While it will run in a browser, it's best to make a web app shortcut so you aren't bothered by things like an address bar or tabs. To do this, tap the Share button, then select Add to Home Screen. This will make a Stadia web app icon on your iPhone or iPad. When you launch it, you'll get a full-screen Safari window with no address bar, tabs, or other navigation controls in your way.

Zendure likes its beefy power banks, like the 100W one I tested back in the summer, but the Zendure SuperBase 500 has got to be the ultimate one. ∞ Three distinct video reviews of Apple’s AirPods Max

[VIDEO] I’ve watched a number of AirPods Max reviews, picked a few that clicked for me. I appreciate that, for the most part, these revel in the things the AirPods Max do well, and point out the issues (like weight, or the case design) that are worth knowing before you buy in. The videos are embedded in the main Loop post.

I’ll start with MKBHD and his turn-of-phrase “Luxury Listening”. I think this phrase does a solid job capturing the essence of the AirPods Max experience. If fit and finish don’t matter to you, you’re not going to see the value in the AirPods Max. These are true luxury goods.

Next up is Dave Lee and his down-to-Earth, pragmatic analysis. Very personal, not necessarily scientific, but very well explained.

And last but not least is Flossy Carter (expletives, if you care about such things). This review is, to me, the most entertaining of the lot. Flossy made me want to buy them almost from the very start of the video. You’ve been warned.

“What you get with the AirPods Max is just clearer,...

David Carnoy, CNET:

Are they worth $549? Ultimately, that’s going to be up to you to determine. All I can do is describe my experience using them and let you know that they’re excellent (though not perfect) headphones, with top-notch sound, rock-solid wireless connectivity and noise canceling that’s arguably a touch better than what you find on competing models at the high end.

This is a great read. Anecdotal, but very up front about what’s fact and what’s opinion.

A few details:

This review is based on several days with the headphones. I’m still evaluating battery life and wired audio performance (among other things), which may or may not alter the final rating.

And:

The first thing you notice when you open the box is that their build quality is like nothing that’s out there in the $300 to $400 range. OK, there’s some stuff that’s close: The Bowers and Wilkins PX7 (down to $340 from its list price of $400) is sturdily built with an eye-...

Facebook: “We’re standing up to Apple for small...

The Verge:

Facebook is publicly criticizing Apple’s upcoming iOS privacy changes in full-page newspaper ads today. “We’re standing up to Apple for small businesses everywhere,” reads the headline on an ad inside the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal today. Bloomberg News reports that the ads are related to Apple’s iOS 14 privacy changes that will make it more difficult for companies like Facebook to target users with ads.

Anyone buying this stance from Facebook? That Facebook is standing up for small business owners and not actually (and only) concerned about an existential threat to their ad revenue stream?

Developers will need to ask iOS 14 users for permission to gather data and track them across mobile apps and websites on an iPhone and iPad soon. Apple had planned to implement these changes with the initial iOS 14 release in September, but delayed enforcing them until early next year. These changes will impact Facebook’s ad...

Apple says its Employee Giving Program celebrated its biggest year this year. The company’s volunteers made up the largest corporate team participating in 2020.

Since the program’s inception in 2011, Apple employees have raised almost US$600 million in total donations — including more than 1.6 million hours volunteered — for more than 34,000 organizations.

This is on top of the corporate donations Apple’s Community Investment team makes each year to nonprofits around the world, including Feeding America, FIRST, Malala Fund, Simplon, and many others. Apple is making a huge change to settings on users’ iPhones in the name of privacy, but some in the mobile ad ecosystem the tech giant hasn’t given them clear guidance or communication along the way as they retool their apps, reports CNBC.

The new rules related to the tracking systems are known as Identifier for Advertisers (IDFA). Each iPhone comes with an individual IDFA, which behaves similarly to a browser cookie does for computers, letting third parties identify the user. The basis of Schems’ case is that, under EU law, individuals must consent to this tracking, but IDFA is activated by default inside iOS.

The identifier for advertisers or IDFA is the only means for advertisers to precisely target and track users within apps on iOS devices. Think of an IDFA as something like a cookie that is tied to devices...

The next generation (the third) of Apple’s AirPods will adopt the design of the AirPods Pro (pictured) but without the noise-canceling and transparency features of the Pro model, TheElec reports. The article adds they’ll be dubbed “AirPods Pro Lite,” cost around US$200 and a launch in the first half of 2021.

TheElec says Apple initially planned to launch a Lite version right after the AirPods Pro were launched in October of 2019. However those plans were purportedly canned as the Pros were selling better than expected.

The Sellers Research Group (that’s me) thinks this report may be correct. On the other hand, the AirPods and AirPods are selling like gangbusters, and the pricey AirPod Max seems to be doing well, so is there really a need for AirPods Pro Lite?

How to change your iCloud storage plan

If you’re running low on space in your iCloud account, it’s easy to upgrade if you’re willing to spend the money.

When you set up iCloud, you automatically get 5GB of storage. You can use that space for your iCloud backups, to keep your photos and videos stored in iCloud Photos, and your documents up to date in iCloud Drive. You can buy more storage any time.

You can choose from a total of 50GB, 200GB, or 2TB. You can even share the 200GB and 2TB plans with your family. Your storage is upgraded immediately, and your monthly payment date reflects the purchase date for your plan. If you upgrade from one paid plan to another, we’ll cancel your existing plan and charge you the prorated cost of your new, larger plan.

You're billed every month for your storage plan unless you downgrade or cancel your plan. Each month you'll get an email to remind you of your upcoming payment.

With Apple One, you can choose a...

Apple patent is for multi-user devices that reopens...

Future Apple devices such as Macs, iPhones, iPads, and Apple TV set-top boxes could respond to an individual user’s voice, facilitating multi-user configurations, according to a newly granted Apple patent (number 10,867,608).

In the patent data, the tech giant notes that the number of electronic devices, and particularly smart devices, in users' homes continues to increase. These devices are required to perform increasingly complex tasks, including user-specific tasks in multi-user environments.

However, Apple says that some techniques for multi-user configuration using electronic devices “are generally cumbersome and inefficient.” For example, some existing techniques use a complex and time-consuming user interface, which may include multiple key presses or keystrokes. Existing techniques require more time than necessary, wasting user time and device energy.

Apple says it’s idea is for a technique that provides electronic...

Sonnet announces two Thunderbolt 3 to eGPU card...

Sonnet Technologies has launched the eGPU Breakaway Box 750 and eGPU Breakaway Box 750ex, the newest members of the company’s family of Thunderbolt 3 to PCIe graphics processing (GPU) card expansion systems.

Both systems support full-length, full-height, double-width GPU cards, and utilize large temperature-controlled fans that Sonnet says provide efficient and ultra-quiet cooling for the installed card.

The new expansion systems are equipped with 750-watt power supplies capable of supporting “the most power-hungry GPU cards available.” The systems are nearly identical, except the eGPU Breakaway Box 750ex adds a built-in connection hub for USB devices and Ethernet connectivity.

The eGPU Breakaway Box 750 is available now from Sonnet at the suggested retail price of US$299.99. The eGPU Breakaway Box 750ex will be available from Sonnet in late December 2020 to early January 2021 at a...

What’s the latest version of macOS you can run on...

People accuse electronics manufacturers of built-in obsolescence: that hardware is designed to stop working or not be useful after a relatively short period of time. Apple has generally avoided that with Macs, letting many of its models receive OS X and macOS updates for five to seven years after the computer version’s initial release. And some people keep older systems running indefinitely, as I noted in a recent column that started with people’s love of 10.6.8 Snow Leopard, now over a decade old.

But Apple doesn’t provide a guide as such as to the “terminal” version of its operating system you can install on any given computer. That is, how do you find the last version your computer is compatible with?

“Servant” is a psychological thriller spearheaded by M. Microsoft Office Is Now Updated For M1 Macs

Microsoft is rolling out an update today that brings native support for Apple's M1 chip to the Windows productivity suite. "The apps getting the updates are Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and OneNote," reports The Verge. "Notably absent, however, is Teams." From the report: The updates are making the apps universal ones -- meaning these versions will run on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, so any upcoming updates or features will be coming at the same time for both platforms. [...] Office users who have automatic updates turned on should have the new versions sometime today, and anyone else can update it through the Mac App Store or Microsoft's AutoUpdate software (depending on if you downloaded Office through the App Store or directly from Microsoft). Outlook users will get not only native Apple Silicon support, but support for iCloud accounts as well, allowing them to sync their email, contacts, and calendars to the app if they use Apple's service to store them.
