That scary Safari malware that infected your Mac?...

Macworld

I was recently visiting my parents when I got the dreaded question: I think my Mac has a virus but I thought Macs didn’t get viruses? They were obviously a little concerned and somewhat embarrassed that they could have allowed something to happen to their Mac.

First off: yes, your Mac can get a virus, though it is still somewhat rare. After all, there are far fewer viruses in the wild to attack macOS than Windows, and way more PCs than Macs in the world. But there are Mac attacks in the wild and many of them originate within a web browser.

There are plenty of ways to scan your Mac for viruses and protect it from incoming attacks. Apple even has its own built-in antivirus tech called XProtect that constantly scans for known malware. But even with all that protection, things can get through.

Still, if you’re getting messages...

How to pay even more safely with Apple Cash

Macworld

Most credit-card and debit-card numbers are a sequence of 16 digits, with the final number in the sequence being a “checksum,” or a calculated number that was once useful in checking that a card number provided was legitimate. Card numbers can easily be stolen in a lot of ways, including thieves obtaining lists of numbers that were issued through people working in the industry, subverting databases, or even hijacking websites and intercepting data.

One technique to reduce the misuse of card numbers entered into websites was developed a number of years ago. “Virtual cards” were intended to bring the advantages of the internet to card numbers, allowing you to use an app or website associated with your credit card to generate a unique card number on the fly. Each number would have its own expiration date and security code, and in many cases you could define how many times it could be used or set a maximum monthly or all-...

Macworld

A month ago, we told you about the release of Speedometer 3.0, a new web performance testing benchmark that aims to provide a more fair and representative measure of how a web browser performs at modern web tasks. Unlike earlier versions of Speedometer, which were made more or less by Apple’s WebKit team, version 3.0 is made in a collaboration between Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Mozilla with a new governance model to agree upon what tests are important representations of the modern web.

In other words, it’s probably the most “fair” and up-to-date measurement of web browser performance we have right now.

WebKit is the rendering engine used by Safari and provided to Apple developers who wish to use web rendering within their apps. It’s required to be used by every browser on iOS or...

Apple plans to go big with AI and M4 Mac processors...

Macworld

Apple plans to make a big splash with its Mac releases this year. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the Mac will get an “overhaul” with an M4 chip that is designed with big AI enhancements. Gurman reports that every Mac model will be updated with an M4, which “will come in at least three main varieties.”

Gurman states that the new wave of AI-enhanced Macs could start later this year and continue into 2025. The AI-enhanced M4 rollout begins with the MacBook Pro, the Mac mini, and “iMacs.” In 2025, the MacBook Air is scheduled for the spring, followed by the Mac Studio around WWDC 2025 and the Mac Pro later in the year. “But the company’s plans could change,” said Gurman.

M3 Mac Studio: Everything you need to know

Macworld

The M2 Max and Ultra Mac Studio were released at WWDC23 last June, and the M3 era of Apple’s System on a Chip started last November. So, with WWDC24 creeping up on us, it’s time to start looking forward to the next Mac Studio.

The rumors will start to increase as June 2024 approaches, and whatever is reported now can change (and likely will) before the new Mac Studio is released. We’ll keep track of what’s being said in this article.

Update 4/11/24: Apple is reportedly testing a Mac Studio with an M3-series chip, as well as an M4 chip.

M3 Mac Studio: Release date

We’ve had two generations of Mac Studio. The first gen (M1 Max and Ultra) was released in March of 2022. The second-gen (M2 Max and Ultra) was revealed at WWDC23 in June 2023. Apple will likely continue with a March...

32-inch iMac Pro: What you need to know about the...

Macworld

Prior to March 2022, Apple sold two sizes of its iMac desktop computer. The smaller-screened model was more suited to home users due to its less powerful processor, while the larger 27-inch model, with more speed, higher-end features, and high-res display, was meant to be powerful enough for more demanding users.

When Apple introduced the 24-inch iMac in 2021 with a colorful redesign and M1 chip, it was the beginning of the end for the high-end version. First Apple discontinued the iMac Pro, and a year later introduced the Mac Studio with the 27-inch Studio Display in March 2022 and discontinued the 27-inch iMac at the same time.

But the story doesn’t end there. Ever since it was retired, there have been rumors that Apple has plans to introduce a new version of the iMac Pro that would also mark the return of the 27-inch iMac–although it could have an even bigger screen, perhaps 32-inches! In this article, we’ll...

Mac Pro: Everything you need to know

Macworld

Apple’s Intel Mac Pro was introduced in 2019 and since then Apple has transitioned every other Mac to its own chip architecture, starting with the M1 in November 2020 followed by the M1 Pro, M1 Max, M1 Ultra, then the M2 in June 2022, and M2 Pro and M2 Max in January 2023. The Mac Pro, which was still using an aging Intel processor, was looking very dated.

Finally, four years after the 2019 model was unveiled, Apple introduced a Mac Pro with Apple silicon inside at WWDC in June 2023. The new Mac Pro features the M2 Ultra combining the performance of Apple’s most powerful chip with the versatility of PCIe expansion. The Mac Studio has also been updated with the same M2 Ultra chip. Apple Plans To Overhaul Entire Mac Line With AI-...

Apple, aiming to boost sluggish computer sales, is preparing to overhaul its entire Mac line with a new family of in-house processors designed to highlight AI. Bloomberg News: The company, which released its first Macs with M3 chips five months ago, is already nearing production of the next generation -- the M4 processor -- according to people with knowledge of the matter. The new chip will come in at least three main varieties, and Apple is looking to update every Mac model with it, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans haven't been announced.

The new Macs are underway at a critical time. After peaking in 2022, Mac sales fell 27% in the last fiscal year, which ended in September. In the holiday period, revenue from the computer line was flat. Apple attempted to breathe new life into the Mac business with an M3-focused launch event last October, but those chips didn't bring major performance improvements over the M2 from the prior year. Apple Will Open the iPhone To Repair With Used Parts

Apple is finally making it easier for users to repair their iPhones with used parts. From a report: In an update on Thursday, the company announced that this fall, owners of "select" iPhone models will be able to repair their devices with used, genuine parts while retaining full functionality. When repairing a phone, Apple requires iPhone users to go through a process called parts pairing, which makes them match the serial number of their device to that of a new part sold by Apple. If a user replaced a part with an aftermarket or used component, the iPhone would display pesky notifications saying that Apple isn't able to verify the newly installed piece. In the case of Face ID and Touch ID sensors, the part might not work at all. This change should do away with these notifications for used parts, as Apple says "calibration for genuine Apple parts, new or used, will happen on device after the part is installed." It also means users and repair shops will no longer have to provide the...

A serious bug known to affect the two most recent Apple Watch models is more widespread than previously thought, Apple has admitted in a memo to authorized repair companies. As well as the Series 9 and Ultra 2 launched in late 2023, it also affects three models from previous years: the Series 7, Series 8, and Ultra 1.

Back in February, an apparently leaked internal memo revealed that Apple was aware of a screen problem with its newest smartwatches which the company referred to as “false touches.” Despite Apple’s somewhat mild description of the issue, customers reported that it could cause the screen to jump around or behave erratically without any input, and coined the term “ghost touches.”

The new iPhone 16 won’t be here until September, but we already know a lot about it. More than the new chip, slimmer bezels, and better cameras, the most anticipated feature of each year’s iPhones is the new colors Apple has in store. Here’s what we know so far about what’s coming this year.

Call Apple Vision Pro a flop at your own risk

Macworld

When I was a kid, the first personal computer I ever saw showed up in an elementary school classroom one day and changed my life. But in the early days of the computer, they were expensive and impractical–yet somehow also on the cutting edge and pointing toward the future. Computers were more than a decade away from becoming ubiquitous.

Things were different in the 1970s, I guess. (But yes, they were as colorful as you imagine–but much smellier.) Today, we are so tech-savvy as a society that we’ve forgotten what it’s like to be on the ground floor of a barely feasible product category. And yet, that’s just where we are with the Apple Vision Pro and similar products.

I’m not declaring that the Vision Pro has a special destiny because there’s no way to know that. But I do feel comfortable suggesting that those who are declaring it a dead end and a failed product might want to consider how foolish it would have been...

Mercenary attacks of this nature typically cost millions of dollars, and are often useless once discovered by security researchers and patched by iOS security updates. They are often believed to be state-sponsored, due to the high cost of development to craft such complex and sophisticated attacks. However, in a notable change of language, Apple no longer says this explicitly in its threat notifications.

“Batterygate” refers to one of the most well-known scandals affecting Apple’s reputation. A few years ago it was settled in the United States, and now, it has reached Canada. Users of some iPhone models in this country can claim up to $150 Canadian from Apple. The accusation against Apple is based on the fact that […]

iOS 18: Everything you need to know about the next...

Macworld

Every year, Apple announces the new version of iOS at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June. It then enters a beta testing period (first for developers only, then for the public) before being released in September, around the time the new iPhones go on sale.

We don’t expect the process or timeline to change this year, but that’s about the only thing we can count on being the same as years past. When it comes to iOS 18 itself—its features and changes—the rumors and leaks point to what might be one of the most consequential iPhone software updates in years.

What follows is a summary of rumors and leaks, but bear in mind that the final product may not quite resemble what you read here. Information about upcoming Apple products is often unreliable, and even when it’s accurate, plans change. That said, this is what we think we know so far.

Macworld

Apple’s list of currently available content for Apple TV+ continues to grow, and so does the list of upcoming projects in the works. Films, limited series, specials, and multi-season series—Apple’s got lots of irons in the fire.d

Some of these projects have been officially announced and acknowledged by Apple, while others have been reported by the Hollywood press, which always has its ear to the ground about what projects actors, directors, and producers are involved in.

We’ve divided this list in two: Coming Soon is a list of shows for which Apple has given an official release date or release window, and Further Out compiles content that is still in production or perhaps haven’t even begun yet.

Enlarge (credit: Thomas Trutschel / Contributor | Photothek)

Smaller web browsers are gaining traction in the European Union after the Digital Markets Act (DMA) started requiring designated gatekeepers like Google and Apple to make it easier to switch default web browsers on devices.

Previously, tech giants were able to lock users into setting their own browsers as defaults—or at least make it complicated to update the defaults—offering the majority of users their own browsing services for free while collecting data used for ad-targeting. This, the EU feared, kept users from switching to defaults that...

The next major step for Apple chips could happen...

Macworld

According to a report by DigiTimes (subscription required), chip maker TSMC is on schedule with its 2nm manufacturing process, which could mean that Apple will start using 2nm chips as soon as next year.

TSMC may be able to start trial runs of 2nm later this year, with small production runs following that, and larger production starting later in 2025. The timing seems to indicate that the A19 processor in the 2025 iPhone Pro would be the first 2nm chip. That could be followed by a 2nm M4 chip in the MacBook Pro and iMac, and maybe any other Mac if it did not get an M3 upgrade (the Mac mini, in particular).

DigiTimes also reports that TSMC is already working on the production process after 2nm, which...

I’ve long been a user of the 2019 Intel Mac Pro. I firmly believe it is one of the best, most upgradable products Apple has ever released. And even with a new M2 Ultra-equipped Mac Pro on the market, I’m not giving up my 2019 Mac Pro just yet.

To be clear, I’m not recommending that you go buy this discontinued product. Generally, most users should not consider an Intel Mac Pro—or Apple silicon Mac Pro for that matter. A Mac Studio with the M2 Ultra can do what’s needed in most key areas. The newly-minted MacBook Pro with an M3 Max is an absolute performance champion that’s power efficient and priced right.

I was recently chatting with someone about what it was like in the early days of Apple’s second act with the iPod, and I mentioned that Mac users had the ultimate flex against PC users: no viruses and no malware. This was when PC users could get a virus from simply breathing in the wrong direction. The general argument from the mainstream at the time was that once Macs became popular, they’d be filled with viruses as well. The Mac became popular (especially at work), and the mass virus attacks never arrived. So that begs the question of 2024: Do you need malware protection on macOS...

If you are concerned about your privacy and security online using a VPN could give you some reassurance. Apple provides various measures in macOS that make Macs more secure, but if you want to ensure that the connection between your Mac and the internet is protected, rather than the computer itself, you need a VPN.

Using a VPN essentially makes you invisible on the web–your data is encrypted, your IP address is hidden, and you can even make it look like you are surfing from another country. This latter reason is the key motive many people using a VPN have: they want to access services that are locked to a particular region, such as accessing U.S. Netflix from the U.K or...
