Letter from Congress could be first step in forcing...

A letter has been sent from Congress to the Department of Defense claiming China's subsidizing of display producers is a security risk to the US, with an endgame that could result in forcing Apple to change its supply sources.

BOE has been linked to the iPhone SE 4, which could look like the iPhone 14
Apple's global supply chain relies on multiple companies to provide displays for its iPhones, iPads, and Macs. However, while Chinese producer BOE has had a troubled existence within the supply chain, its status may become a little tougher to maintain.

John Moolenaar (R-MI), chairman of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party,...

iPhone 16 and 16 Pro review: A worthy upgrade after...

Enlarge / From left to right: iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. (credit: Samuel Axon)

With the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro, it has never been clearer that the cycle of radical invention has given way to iterative updates—not just on an annual basis, but a monthly one, due to delayed features coming in later software updates during the iOS 18 cycle.

The final form of the smartphone as we know it has been reached and nearly perfected. Nothing fundamental is changing anymore. But if you take the long view of just a few years, you can still see some impressive progress.

Year after year, the iPhone 16 is Apple’s most lightly iterative flagship...

Disney is coming down hard on users that share accounts across households, with the company forcing users that are doing so to add a paid sharing add-on to their account.

Disney+'s password crackdown
Streaming services often miss out on subscription revenue because of the common practice of password sharing. Families often use the same account credentials between houses, which saves them money.

However, Disney has decided to try and recoup the missed-out subscriptions for Disney+, by clamping down on the practice.

How to turn the Action Button into a multi-function...

The Action Button on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 provides one-click access to features, but strangely it can only perform one action. With a quick workaround in the Shortcuts apps, it's possible to use the Action Button to trigger up to eight applications or automations.

The iPhone Action Button is more powerful than you may think.
The Action button has several default functions, including toggling silent mode, launching an app, setting focus, and more.

The Action Button can only be assigned to perform a specific task, which is unusual when Apple uses double and triple clicks on the AirPods to perform different functions.

A Few Brief Thoughts on Meta Connect 2024

I’ll link first to The Verge’s “Everything Announced at Meta Connect 2024” roundup because Meta still hasn’t posted today’s keynote address on YouTube; best I’ve found is this recording of the livestream, starting around the 43m:20s mark. I watched most of the keynote live and found it engaging. Just 45 minutes long — partly because it was information dense, and partly because Mark Zuckerberg hosted the entire thing himself. He seems very comfortable, confident, and natural lately. Nothing slows an on-stage keynote down more than a parade of VPs. There was clearly no political infighting at Meta for stage time in this keynote. The keynote was Zuck’s, and because of that, it was punchy and brisk.

In terms of actual products that will actually ship, Meta announced the $...

After spending over $100 million and betting the company he founded on principle alone, Joe Kiani is out at Masimo. However, the reason he has resigned as CEO has nothing to do with Apple or a patent dispute.

Reuters has the story, stating that Kiani stepped down after being removed from Masimo's board by shareholders. The move came after a proxy battle with hedge fund Politan Capital Management.

Meta's Orion preview shines a light on Apple...

While Meta might be playing fast and loose describing its Orion smart glasses as having the look and feel of a regular pair of glasses, it is a clear look at the future possibilities of Apple Vision.

Meta Orion are a pair of AR glasses that hope to pass as regular specs
Words used to mean something, like "Artificial Intelligence," "hologram," and "regular pair of glasses," but we're throwing out all pretense in light of Meta's latest announcement. These definitely "regular" looking spectacles promise to bring augmented reality computing to your face — well, not your face exactly.

Orion isn't a public product. It is being revealed to show that Meta has made progress in the last five years towards, well, something.

Panels, a New Wallpaper App From Marques Brownlee

A swing-and-a-miss from MKBHD. Criticism of the app is on two separate levels, but they’re being conflated. Level 1: the app is not good. Level 2: a paid wallpaper app? — LOL, wallpapers are free on Reddit. That second form of criticism — that there shouldn’t even exist a paid wallpaper app — is annoying and depressing, and speaks to how many people do not view original art as worth paying for. But it also speaks to the breadth of Brownlee’s audience, which I think is more tech-focused than design-focused. Scott Smith, on Mastodon, observed:

It’s really interesting to compare the reaction from the indie iOS
community of @Iconfactory’s Wallaroo to the mainstream tech

These customers are described as the "fastest upgraders," and they show a distinct pattern of behavior that sets them apart from those who hold onto their iPhones for extended periods. For example, approximately 67% of all iPhone buyers also own an iPad, and 36% own a Mac computer.

The iPhones 16

One of the many memorable moments in Steve Jobs’s 2007 introduction of the original iPhone was this slide showing four of the then-leading smartphones on the market. Jobs explained:

Now, why do we need a revolutionary user interface? Here’s four
smartphones, right? Motorola Q, the BlackBerry, Palm Treo, Nokia
E62 — the usual suspects. And, what’s wrong with their user
interfaces? Well, the problem with them is really sort of in the
bottom 40 there. It’s this stuff right there. They all have these
keyboards that are there whether or not you need them to be there.
And they all have these control buttons that are fixed in plastic
and are the same for every application. Well, every application
wants a slightly different user interface, a slightly optimized
set of buttons, just for it.

And what happens if you think of a great idea six months from now...

The new Apple Watch Series 10 has been on sale but doesn’t start shipping to customers until this Friday, September 20. But on Tuesday, the embargo for early reviews was lifted and posted to the web. The initial impression from these reviews is that the Series 10 is yet another solid offering from Apple.

Victoria Song at The Verge usually wears an Apple Watch Ultra 2 because of its large display but found that with the Series 10, she doesn’t miss the Ultra 2. “The bottom line is the Series 10 is a sleeker, more wearable Ultra,” according to Song. Song also appreciates the thinner profile: “It fits easily under jacket cuffs, doesn’t catch on the straps at my Pilates class, and doesn’t slide up and down my arm when I run.” Song points out that the new Sleep Apnea detection feature requires a longer time period to test, but she...

This portable iPad stand that swivels is only $10

Macworld

Having a fun and convenient way to prop up your iPad while you’re working or cooking can be super helpful. So check out this awesome find: This Omoton tablet stand is only $10 right now, half off its usual price and an impulse buy for a cool product.

What makes this tablet stand awesome is the fact that it works with just about any model you have. Ranging from the smallest models up to 15.6-inch versions, the Omoton stand works with your favorite iPad just as well as it will with your smartphone. It even works with a portable monitor if you have one of those. The stand rotates 360 degrees, so you can turn it around as needed. And don’t worry, the swivel mechanism is secure enough that your tablet won’t end up taking a tumble. The base is made out of heavier metal, thus preventing wobbling or tipping over.

One cool thing...

iOS 18 features an all-new Photos app, here’s how to...

One of the biggest changes in iOS 18 is the all-new Photos app, which has been redesigned from the ground up. Apple says the new Photos design is meant to make it easier than ever to “find and relive special moments.”

One of my favorite parts of the new Photos app in iOS 18, however, is that it’s completely customizable.

How Apple can improve on the fitness ring [Video]

The fitness tracker market seems to always be changing, and while the watch form factor has dominated the market, there’s a growing interest in more discreet health trackers, like a ring form factor. As someone who is addicted to their Apple Watch, I wanted to find a new and less distracting fitness tracker form factor. So, I decided to give the Amazfit Helio Ring a try to replace my watch. The Helio Ring stands out in this category, offering a compact form factor and impressive functionality for tracking sleep, workouts, and overall health. But, as great as the Helio Ring is, I kept thinking to myself: How would Apple improve upon this form factor?

Third-party Epic Games Store now available on iPad...

"Fortnite" and other Epic-published games have returned to the iPad — though technically only for those in the European Union.

Fortnite returns to iPadOS
This is largely because an update to iPadOS 18 now allows users to download apps from third-party app stores on the iPad. Of course, this is restricted exclusively to the EU as part of Apple's push to comply with regulators.

The Epic Game Store for iOS was previously green lit by Apple in early July but only after the publisher complained that Apple...

Apple Watch Series 10 review roundup: A strong...

Reviewers are saying the Apple Watch Series 10 is thinner and better than ever, but Apple could've pushed harder to rejuvenate the popular smartwatch line.

Apple Watch Series 10
The initial reviews of Apple's latest wearable device have started to surface. The initial wave appears to agree that the redesign is a success, thanks to its thinner body and bigger screen.

The Apple Watch Series 10 is available to preorder now, starting from $399 for the aluminum 42mm model, $429 for the 46mm. The titanium version, replacing the stainless steel variant, starts from $699.

If you are wondering if Apple has sales, prepare to be disappointed. Apple rarely discounts its own products–even during its annual Black Friday shopping event, it traditionally elects to give out gift cards rather than actual price reductions. It also offers year-round discounts to students, including a Back To School event where students can get up to $150 in gift cards when purchasing certain Apple products. There’s also the...

Setapp Mobile

Setapp Mobile is the latest move by the company to try and streamline the process for users to actually install iOS apps under the subscription. Previously, subscribers had to take multiple steps to install apps, which was complex compared to a typical App Store purchase.

How to turn off the gaps in macOS Sequoia's...

By default, macOS Sequoia leaves a neat gap between windows when they are tiled — but if you don't like that, it's easy to change it.

Tiled windows have a gap, or margin, by default, but you can change that.
If you use Apple's new Window Tiling feature in macOS Sequoia to just tile one window over the side of your screen, you'll never notice this. But as soon as you tile two next to each other, you'll see a gap.

It's the same kind of gap that Apple imposes when you drag widgets onto the Mac screen, the same kind of thing where it's trying to make things neat. It isn't a mistake, it's a conscious choice by Apple — but you can still change it if you like.

Apple's latest update to iOS 18 brings more customization and iMessage features to the iPhone. However, it lacks the heavily publicized and all-important Apple Intelligence.

iOS 18
It's the fall, and that means Apple has released a new operating system for the iPhone. For 2024, the new device range is the iPhone 16 family, while iOS 18 is the software running on it.

However, following the last few years of updates, we're now at a point where most of Apple's changes could be considered quality-of-life improvements. You wouldn't expect it to be groundbreaking, but there's usually something interesting for users to enjoy....

RCS on iPhone with iOS 18: Every question answered

Macworld

Ever since Apple shocked the tech community with its announcement that it would support RCS, we’ve been waiting for the day when it would be available. Now that day has arrived, you can finally use it on your iPhone, here’s how it works.

What is RCS?

RCS stands for Rich Communications Services, and it’s meant to be a replacement for the decades-old SMS/MMS texting standard.

You can kind of think of it as iMessage lite for everyone. It’s a platform-neutral standard adopted by the GSM Association to do messaging over your internet data connection rather than strictly your carrier network. It provides many of the same benefits, including typing indicators, full-resolution images and videos, proper group chats, delivery and read...

External, directional light on an Apple Watch
Apple Watch already comes with a flashlight, it's just not as well known as the one in the iPhone. That's because in comparison to the iPhone's flashlight, Apple rather hides that the Watch has one too.

This is how long Macs and MacBooks last

Macworld

Macs have a high price so it’s understandable that many Mac users will want to put off replacing them for as long as they can. But just how long should you expect a Mac to last?

You may also be considering buying a secondhand Mac and wondering how old is too old? For example, is that 2017 MacBook Pro for $300/£300 a good deal, or would you be better off spending a bit more on a newer model?

One factor to consider is the age at which most Macs start to experience issues, such as random shutdowns and degraded batteries that no longer hold their charge. Unfortunately, at one point repairing your Mac or MacBook will no longer be a viable option and you will need to look for a replacement.

Another issue with aging Macs is that the software you need may not run on it. You may also find that Apple no longer supports the operating system software that runs on that Mac – which could leave you open to malware and...

Apple Watch Series 10 review: Ultra inspired,...

For the last week, I’ve been testing the new Apple Watch — mostly by sleeping. That’s because Apple Watch Series 10 is capable of detecting signs of sleep apnea.

I’ll need a few more weeks of sleep before possible sleep apnea can be flagged. In the meantime, there’s plenty to admire in the waking hours of the day.

Apple Watch Series 10 has a larger screen and a thinner design. It also gains new tricks like always displaying seconds and speaker media playback.

Of course, the new hardware includes all the Apple Watch features introduced in recent years. These include Crash Detection, the double tap gesture, and better performance just to name a few.

Best Apple Watch deals this month

Macworld

The Apple Watch is the best smartwatch on the market for many, offering a high-quality smartwatch experience, but it’s not cheap—starting at $399/£399 for the Apple Watch Series 10. However, you don’t have to pay full price for an Apple Watch. Right now resellers are offering some fantastic deals on the Apple Watch.

The deals are likely to get even better as resellers look to clear out stock of older watch models that Apple has stopped selling since introducing the latest models at its September iPhone event. If it doesn’t have to be the latest Apple Watch, you could see some good savings by plumping for the Series 9 or another discontinued model. Another way to save money is to find a deal that bundles an Apple Watch with another device...

The iPhone 16 is doomed and it’s all Apple...

Macworld

It is now about 15 minutes after iPhone preordering opened and, yes, the Macalope believes we can say categorically that the iPhone 16 line is an abject failure.

Sad. Surely it will be pulled from the market soon.

This might seem early but it is not the earliest an Apple product has been declared troubled by poor sales. In recent memory, the prize goes to the Vision Pro, which was reported to have production cuts in the summer before it was released. Not only that, these “drastic” production cuts were reported to be to 400,000 units. Nine months later, after the Vision Pro’s release, another outfit reported Apple was undertaking “unfavorable” production cuts to… 400,000 units.

Yes, the Vision Pro’s production figures were cut twice to the same number. Honestly, the Macalope’s not sure how you top that....

Apart from the much-ballyhooed (and delayed) Apple Intelligence, a big change to home screen customization and app icon placement is one of iOS 18’s flagship features, alongside an overhauled Control Center.

With the public launch of iOS 18 this week, we’ll be delving into those flagship features one by one, and I’m starting with the home screen because I have often criticized the iPhone’s home screen experience in the past. iOS 18 promises the biggest update to home screen customization since, well, ever.

Let’s walk through how to use the new features, explore how they work, and try to answer the most important question: does the iPhone finally offer the kind of...
