For the past few years, Apple has been making big-budget movies meant to compete with the best traditional Hollywood studios have to offer, and it has been releasing them in theaters to drive ticket sales and awards buzz.

Much of that is about to change, according to a report from Bloomberg. The article claims that Apple is "rethinking its movie strategy" after several box office misfires, like Argylle and Napoleon.

It has already canceled the wide theatrical release of one of its tent pole movies, the George...

This 100W power bank that can fast-charge a MacBook...

Macworld

Being able to charge your laptops and smartphones and any other gadgets on the go is just what you need, especially if the battery life of your device has dropped recently. Thankfully, the Baseus Blade Laptop Power Bank is on sale for $54 at Amazon right now, down from its usual $130, so make sure you add this one to your cart.

This slim 20,000mAh battery pack is ideal for charging laptops, including your favorite MacBook, iPhones, and iPads. I personally have the second edition and wish I’d have this version instead. While this model is only a bit thicker than the second version, it has a lot more power, which is essential when charging laptops.

Still, even though this is a thicker model, it’s still slim at just 0.7 inches, making it super easy to slip into your bag next to your laptop or iPad. It also weighs just a little over a pound, so you don’t make...

pdfFiller review: An overpriced, half-baked PDF...

Macworld

At a glanceExpert's Rating

Pros

  • Cross-platform solution with macOS, iOS, iPadOS, Windows, Android, and web apps.
  • Offers monthly and annual plans with a free trial through the web or Apple’s App Store.
  • Features an integrated library of some commonly needed documents and forms.

Cons

  • The Mac app fails to deliver all advertised features.
  • The monthly plans are objectively overpriced.
  • The app performs poorly and its design is quite dated.

Our Verdict

pdfFiller can get some basic tasks done, but promised features are missing and it doesn’t always perform reliably. You can find better-optimized PDF editors with more advanced functionalities that cost significantly less.

The iPhone will finally kill Android in 2025

Macworld

Like a soft-hearted boxer trying to give the crowd value for money, Apple has done its best for years to keep Google standing in the smartphone ring. If it truly exerted itself, we always felt, the Cupertino Crusher could put the Mountain View Mangler on the canvas in short order. But the company could never quite bring itself to apply the coup de grâce.

The reason, of course, has nothing to do with charity—Apple simply doesn’t want to release an iPhone that’s better or more expensive to manufacture than it needs to be. It has numerous advantages over the various Android hardware vendors: it has more money to spend on R&D, it can control and optimise hardware and software together, it has better customer trust and brand recognition, and its business model isn’t based on advertising and data capture. But while an “insanely great” iPhone might kill Android as a realistic alternative, it would cut into profit...

How to get WhatsApp on iPad

Macworld

WhatsApp is an incredibly popular iPhone app, connecting more than a billion active members around the world every day. It lets you send messages to friends, or groups of friends, over Wi-Fi or 4G/5G and make savings on your phone bill. (Of course, you may end up paying for data if you go over your limit, so don’t go crazy!)

Unfortunately, right now WhatsApp is only available for iPhone–there isn’t a version of the app for the iPad despite the fact that WhatsApp boss Will Cathcart (in January 2022) acknowledged in an interview that people had been asking for an iPad app for a long time. Cathcart revealed that much of the infrastructure to develop an iPad app is already in place, but he made no immediate promises.

Things could be about to change though. WhatsApp for iPad is available as a beta via TestFlight and can be...

With the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro, it has never been clearer that the cycle of radical invention has given way to iterative updates—not just on an annual basis, but a monthly one, due to delayed features coming in later software updates during the iOS 18 cycle.

The final form of the smartphone as we know it has been reached and nearly perfected. Nothing fundamental is changing anymore. But if you take the long view of just a few years, you can still see some impressive progress.

Year after year, the iPhone 16 is Apple’s most lightly iterative flagship...

A Few Brief Thoughts on Meta Connect 2024

I’ll link first to The Verge’s “Everything Announced at Meta Connect 2024” roundup because Meta still hasn’t posted today’s keynote address on YouTube; best I’ve found is this recording of the livestream, starting around the 43m:20s mark. I watched most of the keynote live and found it engaging. Just 45 minutes long — partly because it was information dense, and partly because Mark Zuckerberg hosted the entire thing himself. He seems very comfortable, confident, and natural lately. Nothing slows an on-stage keynote down more than a parade of VPs. There was clearly no political infighting at Meta for stage time in this keynote. The keynote was Zuck’s, and because of that, it was punchy and brisk.

In terms of actual products that will actually ship, Meta announced the $...

Panels, a New Wallpaper App From Marques Brownlee

A swing-and-a-miss from MKBHD. Criticism of the app is on two separate levels, but they’re being conflated. Level 1: the app is not good. Level 2: a paid wallpaper app? — LOL, wallpapers are free on Reddit. That second form of criticism — that there shouldn’t even exist a paid wallpaper app — is annoying and depressing, and speaks to how many people do not view original art as worth paying for. But it also speaks to the breadth of Brownlee’s audience, which I think is more tech-focused than design-focused. Scott Smith, on Mastodon, observed:

It’s really interesting to compare the reaction from the indie iOS

First Impressions of the iPhone 16 Pro

After spending a weekend with the iPhone 16 Pro, Adam Engst feels even more confident in his earlier recommendation of the iPhone 16 for most people. The iPhone 16 Pro’s increased size and weight, along with the lack of noticeably better macro photos, make the standard model a better choice for most.

10 long years with—and good riddance to—Apple’s...

This past weekend, I said goodbye to Apple’s 4.7-inch iPhone 6 design after 10 long years.

It started with the iPhone 6 itself in 2014, a long-awaited screen size upgrade for the iPhone (some of the 2011-era Apple punditry insisting that 3.5 inches was the functionally perfect size for a phone screen and that Apple would never, ever change it, is an interesting time capsule). It ends with my wife’s third-...

How to Avoid Sequoia’s Repetitive Screen Recording...

Despite online criticism that continued through multiple betas of macOS 15 Sequoia, Apple has maintained the monthly permissions prompts for screen recording permissions. Adam Engst explains why these prompts reduce security and are examples of poor interface design before suggesting a way of eliminating them for a period of time.

Tandem OLED is OLED’s latest weapon in holding off...

Tandem OLED has been around for years, but Apple made the technology feel new and shiny when it announced that the screen in its first ever OLED-based iPad would use a tandem structure.

Other consumer gadgets, like laptops and phones, are also slowly starting to incorporate Tandem OLED displays. So we thought it's a good time to look at how Tandem OLED is used, what benefits it's delivering, and how the technology could impact future devices and compete against other emerging display technologies, like MicroLED and QDEL....

Reviewing iOS 18 for power users: Control Center,...

Enlarge / Control Center has a whole new customization interface. (credit: Samuel Axon)

iOS 18 launched this week, and while its flagship feature (Apple Intelligence) is still forthcoming, the new OS included two significant new buckets of customization: the home screen and Control Center.

We talked about home screen a few days ago, so for our next step in our series on iOS 18, it’s now time to turn our attention to the new ways you can adjust the Control Center to your liking. While we’re at it, we’ll assess a few other features meant to make iOS more powerful and more efficient for power users.

This is by no means the most significant...

The iPhones 16

One of the many memorable moments in Steve Jobs’s 2007 introduction of the original iPhone was this slide showing four of the then-leading smartphones on the market. Jobs explained:

Now, why do we need a revolutionary user interface? Here’s four
smartphones, right? Motorola Q, the BlackBerry, Palm Treo, Nokia
E62 — the usual suspects. And, what’s wrong with their user
interfaces? Well, the problem with them is really sort of in the
bottom 40 there. It’s this stuff right there. They all have these
keyboards that are there whether or not you need them to be there.
And they all have these control buttons that are fixed in plastic
and are the same for every application. Well, every application
wants a slightly different user interface, a slightly optimized
set of buttons, just for it.

And what happens if you think of a great idea six months from now...

JPMorgan could take over duties as Apple Card issuer...

As Goldman Sachs prepares to offload its responsibilities to Apple, a new suitor has appeared. JPMorgan seems interested in taking the mantle — but with conditions.

Apple Card
It's been known for some time now that Goldman Sachs has wanted to end its relationship with Apple, with whispers of unrest first appearing in June 2023. However, it wasn't much of a surprise, as a report in January 2022 showed the investment bank lost $1.2 billion, chiefly because of the Apple Card.

As a result, Apple and Goldman Sachs have begun looking for a replacement partner who would take over duties as card issuer. The newest suitor to be added to the lineup is JPMorgan.

Apple Watch Series 10 review roundup: A slimmer...

Macworld

The new Apple Watch Series 10 has been on sale but doesn’t start shipping to customers until this Friday, September 20. But on Tuesday, the embargo for early reviews was lifted and posted to the web. The initial impression from these reviews is that the Series 10 is yet another solid offering from Apple.

Victoria Song at The Verge usually wears an Apple Watch Ultra 2 because of its large display but found that with the Series 10, she doesn’t miss the Ultra 2. “The bottom line is the Series 10 is a sleeker, more wearable Ultra,” according to Song. Song also appreciates the thinner profile: “It fits easily under jacket cuffs, doesn’t catch on the straps at my Pilates class, and doesn’t slide up and down my arm when I run.” Song points out that the new Sleep Apnea detection feature requires a longer time period to test, but she...

This portable iPad stand that swivels is only $10

Macworld

Having a fun and convenient way to prop up your iPad while you’re working or cooking can be super helpful. So check out this awesome find: This Omoton tablet stand is only $10 right now, half off its usual price and an impulse buy for a cool product.

What makes this tablet stand awesome is the fact that it works with just about any model you have. Ranging from the smallest models up to 15.6-inch versions, the Omoton stand works with your favorite iPad just as well as it will with your smartphone. It even works with a portable monitor if you have one of those. The stand rotates 360 degrees, so you can turn it around as needed. And don’t worry, the swivel mechanism is secure enough that your tablet won’t end up taking a tumble. The base is made out of heavier metal, thus preventing wobbling or tipping over.

One cool thing...

How Apple can improve on the fitness ring [Video]

The fitness tracker market seems to always be changing, and while the watch form factor has dominated the market, there’s a growing interest in more discreet health trackers, like a ring form factor. As someone who is addicted to their Apple Watch, I wanted to find a new and less distracting fitness tracker form factor. So, I decided to give the Amazfit Helio Ring a try to replace my watch. The Helio Ring stands out in this category, offering a compact form factor and impressive functionality for tracking sleep, workouts, and overall health. But, as great as the Helio Ring is, I kept thinking to myself: How would Apple improve upon this form factor?

"Fortnite" and other Epic-published games have returned to the iPad — though technically only for those in the European Union.

Fortnite returns to iPadOS
This is largely because an update to iPadOS 18 now allows users to download apps from third-party app stores on the iPad. Of course, this is restricted exclusively to the EU as part of Apple's push to comply with regulators.

The Epic Game Store for iOS was previously green lit by Apple in early July but only after the publisher complained that Apple...
